The State Bar of Michigan (SBM) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Assistant Executive Director to support the Executive Director in leading the organization and advancing its mission to serve the legal profession and the public. This is a high-impact leadership role ideal for a licensed Michigan attorney with proven management experience, strategic insight, and a commitment to excellence in public service.
About the Role
As the Assistant Executive Director, you will work closely with the Executive Director, department managers, and key stakeholders to ensure the effective operation and strategic direction of the State Bar. This position plays a vital role in organizational planning, team leadership, and overseeing critical programs and initiatives that support Michigan’s legal community.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership: Collaborate with executive leadership to develop and execute strategic initiatives aligned with SBM’s goals.
- Project Oversight: Lead and support major projects and initiatives, ensuring timely and cost-effective completion.
- Team Support & Development: Provide guidance to department managers, facilitate professional growth, and promote a culture of collaboration and accountability.
- Program & Department Oversight: Work closely with teams in professional responsibility, justice initiatives, unauthorized practice of law, character & fitness, and others on budgeting, planning, and operations.
- Organizational Improvement: Identify opportunities to enhance member services, operations, and the ethical use of technology in the legal field.
- Representative Assembly (RA) Support: Serve as a key staff liaison for the RA and assist with staffing and coordination needs.
- Committee Coordination: Help manage SBM standing committees, including volunteer recruitment, reporting, and strategic operations.
- Special Projects: Undertake additional responsibilities and initiatives as assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualifications
- Licensed attorney in good standing with the State Bar of Michigan
- Strong leadership and administrative experience in a legal, public, or nonprofit organization
- Proven ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and interpersonal skills
- Commitment to ethical practices and the mission of the State Bar of Michigan
