Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individual counseling and psychotherapy to students to maximize their potential to benefit from the college environment and to experience academic success.
- Design, implement, and evaluate group interventions including counseling, psychotherapy, and support to help students establish satisfying personal relationships and become effective in interpersonal processes.
- Conduct intake interviews to help support students in assessing and overcoming specific deficiencies impacting college success. This includes administering and interpreting appropriate psychological tests and their assessment techniques to foster student self-understanding and decision-making.
- Perform crisis counseling and drop-in services.
- Perform necessary charting and data collection/data recording requirements, acting in accordance with professional practice, APA code of ethics, state of Hawaii laws and administrative rules governing the practice of psychology.
- Conduct consultative services, including the provision of training and instruction for faculty, staff, and others to help foster a campus environment that supports and promotes the development of emotionally and mentally healthy students. Also includes implementing outreach strategies including on-line and print media, presentations, orientation programs, info resource fairs, etc.
- Assist with campus compliance and behavioral intervention team programming.
- Work in cooperation with faculty, staff, and others in academic departments, University offices, and the community to continuously improve and assure responsiveness of mental health counseling programs and services that respond to, and/or accommodate changing student demographics and attendant needs. This includes making appropriate referrals off-campus and soliciting expertise from sources external to campus.
- Assumes other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Doctorate Degree from a college or university of recognized standing in counseling or clinical psychology; completion of internship in professional psychology; and licensed as a psychologist in at least one state, with Hawaii licensure needing to be attained within 6 months of start date.
- The equivalent of four years of clinical experience in university counseling services or equivalent mental health setting providing psychological direct services to young adults and/or adults. A doctoral internship in professional psychology may count as one year equivalent.
- Functional knowledge of the purposes and objectives of student development and/or student academic success programs, including developmental issues and problems typical of college students, of first-generation college students, and of minority students underrepresented in higher education.
- Knowledge of the methods, materials, practices, procedures, techniques, and concepts related to student development and/or educational advising support, including career assessment, learning disability assessment, or college success and adjustment.
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate and intervene with severely disturbed young adults and adults.
- Demonstrated skills in providing outreach and prevention services.
- Demonstrated skills in consultation with professional and non-professional colleagues.
- Demonstrated ability and proficiency in psychological assessment and timely production of assessment reports.
- Ability to work outside normally scheduled work hours, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays, and to work a variable work schedule as necessitated by program requirements.
- Demonstrated ability and sensitivity to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, instructional division leaders, staff, students, and others from culturally diverse backgrounds.
