About the Organization

The Partnership for Maternal and Child Health of Northern New Jersey (PMCH) is a nonprofit consortium committed to advancing health equity and improving outcomes for women and children across eight counties in Northern New Jersey. With over 45 programs, more than 180 staff members, and operations spanning three physical locations, PMCH is on a transformative journey to embed anti-racist values and strengthen its operational foundation. PMCH is seeking a CFO who will lead with vision, operational excellence, and a commitment to the organization’s mission and culture.

Position Summary

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will report directly to the President & CEO and serve as a key member of the senior leadership team. This role is both strategic and hands-on, requiring an individual who can operate at a high-level while being deeply engaged in the details of financial operations. The CFO will oversee the organization’s financial health, ensure compliance with grant funding requirements, optimize operational systems, and actively contribute to PMCH’s mission of equity and cultural transformation.

Key Responsibilities

1. Strategic Financial Leadership

  • Develop and implement a forward-looking financial strategy that supports PMCH’s mission and operational goals.
  • Act as a thought partner to the CEO and leadership team on financial decision-making and organizational growth.
  • Identify and implement efficiencies to support the organization’s growth and maximize impact.

2. Grant Management

  • Oversee compliance and reporting for over 40 grants, ensuring proper allocation and adherence to regulations.
  • Provide guidance on budget modifications, minimizing risk to the organization’s reputation.

3. Financial Operations & Systems

  • Evaluate and optimize PMCH’s financial systems (MIP and others) to ensure seamless integration and efficiency.
  • Create detailed mini-budgets for individual programs and train staff on proper financial management and allocations.
  • Ensure all systems and processes align with best practices in nonprofit financial management.
  • Design and implement a Medicaid billing process for less than 500 yearly transactions.

4. Compliance & Audit

  • Maintain compliance with OMB Uniform Guidance, and other federal/state funding requirements.
  • Lead annual audits (state and external) and address any findings proactively.
  • Ensure strong financial controls and address systemic financial challenges.

5. Team Leadership & Development

  • Mentor and develop the finance team, including the Controller, and three accounting/grants managers.
  • Create a collaborative team culture that prioritizes accuracy, efficiency, and accountability.
  • Build capacity within the team to reduce the need for “hand-holding” and enhance organizational resilience.

6. Cultural Alignment & Leadership

  • Actively engage in PMCH’s mission to become an anti-racist organization.
  • Contribute to discourse on equity and inclusion, and embrace the role of financial stewardship in culture change.
  • Collaborate with staff to align financial goals with programmatic and organizational values.

Ideal Candidate Profile

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field; CPA or MBA preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience, with significant nonprofit expertise.
  • Extensive knowledge of grants management, including state and federal funding.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee complex budgets, allocations, and multi-program financial management.
  • Hands-on experience with financial systems, particularly MIP software, and systems integration.

Desired Attributes

  • Experience in Medicaid revenue streams and compliance.
  • A balance of strategic vision and attention to detail, with the ability to “roll up sleeves” when necessary.
  • Patience, strong coaching skills, and a collaborative leadership style.
  • Experience in cultural change management and a passion for equity and inclusion.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to manage diverse personalities.
  • Commitment to PMCH’s mission and the ability to align financial operations with programmatic goals.

Compensation & Work Environment

  • Salary range: $140,000 - $160,000, plus bonus.
  • Flexible hybrid schedule, with a minimum of one day per week in-office.
  • Opportunity to lead the financial transformation of a dynamic and growing nonprofit organization.
