GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Department of Workforce Services, Unemployment Insurance Program, is seeking a Claims Specialist to provide accurate information and high-quality services that promote the economic security of customers. This Claims Specialist will process all types of Unemployment Insurance claims filed with the State of Wyoming via telephone or the Internet. This position will be responsible for acquiring and analyzing all necessary information to determine the eligibility of unemployment claims. This position is office-based only. There are no telework or remote work options.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.
  • Acquires, analyzes, and processes claims.
  • Participates in special development and design projects.
  • Prepares all documentation for the claim.
  • Adjudicates non-separation and non-countable issues when detected in claims taking.
  • Conducts fact-finding investigations with claimants and employers over the phone and through written correspondence.
  • Research wages in other states to ensure claimants receive all benefits they are eligible for.
  • Advises claimants on filing bi-weekly claims and on eligibility requirements.
  • Identifies discrepancies and potential issues on claims.
  • Prepares documents related to specific issues and routes appropriately.
  • Applies unemployment laws, statutes, rules, and regulations in making decisions.

Qualifications



PREFERENCES:


Preference may be given to those with Customer Service experience.
Preference may be given to those with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word experience.
Preference may be given to those with Spanish as a 2nd language.
Preference may be given to those with knowledge of unemployment laws and statutes.

KNOWLEDGE:
  • Skills to deliver excellent customer service.
  • Computer skills, specifically typing with a 10-key.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others.
  • Knowledge of applicable unemployment laws, rules, regulations, and/or policies and procedures
  • Skills in maintaining perspective with angry and upset claimants and the ability to de-escalate a situation.
  • Skills in managing multiple duties throughout the day or week.
  • Decision-making skills.
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks, working independently and as a team member, as well as working with the public in sometimes difficult situations.
  • Ability to conduct interviews of claimants and employers using the skills in oral and written communication.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Bachelor's Degree
Experience:
0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Benefits and Eligibility)
OR
Education & Experience Substitution:
3-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Benefits and Eligibility)
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
None
