The Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial and accounting activities within the construction company. This includes managing the accounting team, ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining internal controls, and supporting strategic financial planning. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in construction accounting, job costing, and financial management. The financial team consists of the Controller, Assistant Controller, Payroll Clerks, AP Clerks, and District Business Managers.
Essential Job Functions
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, general ledger, and bank reconciliations.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for internal review.
- Work with President and CEO to manage job costing and work-in-progress (WIP) reporting to ensure accurate project profitability tracking.
- Develop and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets.
- Coordinate budgeting and forecasting processes in collaboration with project managers and executives.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing training and performance evaluations.
- Implement and maintain accounting software systems (e.g., Sage 300, Viewpoint, QuickBooks, Procore).
- Support strategic initiatives and provide financial insights to guide decision-making.
- Work with the CEO on OpEx accountability and management of budgets.
- All other duties as assigned.
Preferred Talents
- Strong understanding of construction accounting principles, including job costing and WIP.
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Experience with ERP systems used in construction (e.g., Sage, Viewpoint, CMiC).
- Familiarity with AIA billing and lien waivers.
- Knowledge of subcontractor compliance and insurance tracking.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or CMA preferred).
- 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a construction environment.
