Job Title: Director of Safety


Under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Safety is responsible for the safety of the employees on all work sites. This position works closely with Project Managers, field manpower, and the Executive Management Team to ensure all in compliance with OSHA and EPA standards.

This job requires the ability and desire to work in a fast-paced multi-tasked environment with a focus on specific safety practices and health programs. It also requires travel to branch office locations, jobsites and customer facilities

Essential Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for maintaining, updating, and implementing safety programs that incorporate required OSHA trainings.
  • Responsible for ensuring accurate and timely recordkeeping of all safety programs and trainings.
  • Chair all Safety Committee meetings within the organization.
  • Inspect, implement and monitor all work sites to ensure compliance with OSHA and EPA standards.
  • Interface with regulatory bodies (OSHA, EPA, and State/Local Regulators).
  • Provide advice, support, training, and reporting to all levels of management and workforce to achieve HSE objectives and maintain compliance.
  • Ensure that the company is in compliance with local, state, and federal workplace environmental health and safety regulations.
  • Monitor and participate in accident investigations to ensure root-cause analysis is appropriately conducted and corrective action implemented.
  • Serve as corporate expert on specific safety and health programs.
  • Manage the site-specific safety program to ensure a safe environment for all employees working on all jobsites.
  • Drive and promote zero incidents through HSE culture.
  • Track, validate and summarize health and safety performance throughout the company.
  • Have a complete understanding of claims management and workers’ compensation reporting requirements.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time to conduct job site visits.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Safety Manager is responsible for directly supervising all safety department staff.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Safety & Health, EH&S Management or related field is required.
  • 7+ years’ safety experience is required.
  • Experience in the EHS Construction industry a plus.
  • Must hold an OSHA Outreach Instructor Certification for Construction or ability to obtain certification within 3 months of assuming this role required.
  • ASP certification is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of fundamentals of construction safety, accident prevention, occupational injury, human factors, industry safety criteria, risk management and incident investigation techniques and methods required.
  • Professional certification from BCSP, or other safety certifications is a plus.
  • Strong verbal skills which influence, lead, and coach others within the organization required.
  • Significant experience with Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) applications. Demonstration of a positive attitude is required.
  • Ability to deal with fraught situations in a professional manner is required.
  • Ability to think strategically, make sound decisions, and produce accurate and timely results is required.

Environmental conditions of this position are extremely wide ranging including inside, outside, extreme hot, extreme cold, fumes, odors, toxic conditions, dust poor ventilation, hazards, humid, loud noises, vibrations, and wet. This position frequently requires protective equipment for eyes, feet, head, and occasionally for arm, hearing, full body, leg, respirator, and skin. The employee will need to understand simple math, shop math, technical reports, technical instructions, business letters, and simple memos. Writing or presenting summaries, business letters, formal presentations, and simple memos is required. Operation of a computer, hand tools (manual and power), a telephone, headphone, and a hand calculator are required. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to commute to customer and company locations by land and air.
