Abbott’s Digital Solutions organization, part of the Medical Devices group, partners with our Diabetes, Cardiovascular, and Neuromodulation businesses to develop and commercialize digital technologies that expand access to care, optimize medical procedures, and improve chronic disease management. Together with Abbott’s life-changing medical devices, Digital Solutions leverages technologies such as AI and data interoperability to enable people to live life to the fullest.
We are seeking a Director, Software Engineering to join our team and establish the Software Engineering capability and team within Digital Solutions Technology function for a diverse and growing portfolio of digital health products, including software as a medical device (SaMD), connected devices, and digital health platforms. This position reports directly to the Head of Technology, Digital Solutions and will be instrumental Digital Solutions’ expansion and impact.
This position will incubate and advance the usage of standardized Interoperability and Connectivity technology stack across Medical Devices. You will drive technical execution of world-class Interoperability and Connectivity solutions providing efficient means to improving clinical workflow and outcomes for patients, providers and customers.
This position will have the responsibility and oversight of Digital Solutions Interoperability and Connectivity software development and development operations, associated regulated and compliant cloud infrastructure, and platform integration with Abbott Medical Devices Division products.
In addition, this position will ensure data governance is compliant to Abbott data strategy and ethics policies. It will also work closely with IT, Privacy and Cybersecurity functions to ensure underlying data and cloud infrastructure and supporting technologies are in place with consistency across Medical Devices.
Key Responsibilities
Software Product Development
Work closely with Digital Solutions leadership and portfolio program teams to prioritize Connectivity investments that support Abbott Medical Devices’ strategic direction; Assist in assessing and developing business cases for prioritized use cases.
Provide hands on technical leadership support to cross-functional portfolio teams and ensure development and deployment of scalable Interoperability and Connectivity solutions with EHRs, PACS and IoT with Abbott Medical Devices products.
Support program portfolio management and execution across Digital Solutions to ensure the objectives of program(s) including scope, resourcing, budget, and schedule.
Guide development and documentation of requirements, test plan protocols, standard operating procedures, specifications, and test procedures. Ensure Connectivity platform team complies with these policies, procedures, and processes.
Interface with appropriate cross-functional teams and internal and external resources (regulatory, quality, IT, customers, etc.) to ensure Connectivity platform development meets regulatory, compliance, legal and customer requirements.
Strategic Leadership
Act as the primary authority within Digital Solutions group related to Interoperability and Connectivity solutions, cloud platforms, and data strategy
Provide strategic input into Interoperability and Connectivity product development, risk management, and lifecycle planning
Partner across Abbott businesses and functions to educate and embed Interoperability/Connectivity focus throughout the Medical Devices Divisions product lifecycle
People Leadership
Build and lead a high-performing and inclusive Software Product Development team aligned with Digital Solutions’ growth trajectory, fostering a culture of innovation, compliance, and continuous improvement
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or related field
Minimum 12 years of proven experience in Connectivity development within the medical device / life sciences / digital health space, 5+ years being a people manager leading a data science team, ideally on- and offshore
Proven leadership experience leading cross-functional teams
Experience managing and providing direction on digital products / Connectivity solution design and architecture, EHR (HL7/FHIR), DICOM and IoT standards and technology stack
Proven success managing teams using Agile and Scrum methodologies
Effectively collaborates with global teams, leveraging diverse perspectives to enhance project outcomes
Experience with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
Proficiency in one or more programming languages, such as Java, C#, Python, or JavaScript
Strong understanding of database technologies (e.g., SQL, NoSQL) and data modeling principles
Strong communication, analytical, and strategic thinking skills
Strong organizational skills, including program/project governance
Strong influence and negotiating skills with all levels of stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
15 years of experience in developing and commercializing medical devices or life sciences Connectivity products and services
MS and/or PhD degree in computer science or software engineering, or related field
Actively participate and provides technical expertise in the assessment of current and potential partners in the Connectivity space
Experience with selecting and managing suppliers in a large multinational organization
Familiarity with the clinical setting and integrated set of needs by health care professionals, health care systems, and patients
The base pay for this position is $169,300.00 – $338,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
