Description:

Under general supervision, performs predictive, preventative, and corrective maintenance and operation of equipment in transmission, distribution, and generating station facilities. A substation technician will perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance and repair work to facilitate the safe, efficient, and effective operation of the power system.

Qualifications:

High School diploma, GED or equivalent, AND experience equivalent to four (4) years full-time journey level work installing or repairing electronic/electro-mechanical automation equipment OR must be a Journeyman Electric Substation/Generation Technician certified by the Department of Labor, OR successful completion of an applicable four (4) year substation apprenticeship program certified by the Department of Labor, OR four (4) years of directly related experience in two or more of the following job functions:

Experience in Programmable Logic Controllers.

Experience in substation protective relaying, with preferred emphasis in Schweitzer relays with Doble test equipment.

Experience in Hydro-electric operation and maintenance.

Experience with operation and maintenance of gas turbine & reciprocating engine technology.

Logan City may at its discretion hire at an entry level position if applicant is willing to participate in a 4-year Department of Labor apprenticeship and agree to an apprenticeship agreement.

Incumbent will be subject to an "on-call" status for plants and substations, seven (7) days once every four (4) weeks. Must be generally available for emergency "call-out" at any time of day/year, regardless of weather conditions.

Must possess or be able to obtain Red Cross Certification in First aid/Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation. Work within APPA, OSHA, the National Electric Code and the National Electric Safety Code boundaries. May require various OSHA certificates and/or training. Must possess a valid Utah Commercial Driver's License at a level appropriate to the equipment operated.

Responsibilities:

Utilize computers extensively in testing of relays, record keeping, databases, and process control.

Troubleshoots, inspects tests, adjusts, and repairs a variety of electronic/electro-mechanical equipment, including high voltage breakers, relays, transformers, switches, timers, and related control devices in high voltage switchyards, substations, and power operation/generation facilities.

Installs/replaces high voltage breakers and automatic controlling devices.

Updating and maintaining plans/blueprints to reflect changes/additions of systems installations.

Installs, maintains and trouble shoots fiber optic network.

Utilizes aerial equipment when necessary, to perform installation or maintenance of plant equipment and structures. Participates in substation switching procedures, during planned and emergency switching.

Maintains and repairs natural gas and hydro electric generators, including ensuring proper performance criteria and in compliance with Federal Clean Air standards.

Performs maintenance testing and inspections on station batteries and charging systems.

Conducts/records the results of periodic tests of power generation capacity; performs general custodial work as necessary. Installs, maintains and trouble shoots SCADA systems.

Performs physically demanding work; including bending, reaching, stooping, kneeling, standing, climbing ladders, occasional heavy lifting/carrying (150# Nitrogen cylinders), etc. Requires manual dexterity.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the theory and principles of electricity, including their application to the operation of high voltage substations, and transmission/distribution systems.

Knowledge of the practices and techniques of electronic/electro-mechanical equipment installation, maintenance, and repair.

Knowledge of the established safety standards and industry guidelines/regulations for the tools, equipment, and materials used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of system control and other electro-mechanical equipment.

Knowledge of the principles, procedures, maintenance and repair methods for ensuring optimum operation of power plants and their associated equipment.

Skill in determining probable causes of service outages and corrective actions necessary to restore service.

Skill in performing journey level installation, maintenance, and repair of system control and related electronic/electro-mechanical equipment.

Skill in reading and understanding plans and blueprints used for the installation, maintenance, and repair of system control and related electro-mechanical equipment.

Skill in operating, maintaining and repairing generation plants and their associated equipment

Computer skills/programs; Windows, Internet, word processing, AutoCad, RSlogix, SEL, PowerDB, iFix, Proficy, Worldview, etc.
