Position Overview
The Emotional and Mental Health Counselor provides support and crisis intervention to students facing mental health challenges so they can thrive within our educational environment. This role involves conducting triage assessments, delivering short-term counseling, and facilitating mental health education programs. The counselor works collaboratively with students, parents, educators, and other professionals to promote emotional well-being in alignment with our school’s Catholic values.

Qualifications
- Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a school or therapeutic setting.
- Experience working with adolescents in a counseling capacity (preferably in a school).
- Knowledge of adolescent mental health issues and interventions.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Commitment to Catholic values and their integration into counseling practices.
- Counseling or social work license preferred.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace, Outlook, and PowerSchool preferred.
Essential Duties
Counseling Services
- Provide individual and group counseling, preventative initiatives, and developmental programming addressing issues such as anxiety, depression, stress, and relationships.
- Foster a safe, respectful, and value-aligned environment.
- Conduct mental health assessments, prioritizing crisis intervention when needed.
- Deliver short-term counseling and facilitate referrals to external services.
- Develop and implement individualized safety and behavioral plans.
- Collaborate with school leadership and staff for comprehensive case management.
- Maintain a network of local mental health resources.
- Coordinate transitions for students requiring higher-level interventions.
- Serve as the initial contact for mental health emergencies, including monitoring anonymous tip lines.
Mental and Emotional Health Education
- Partner with departments to develop and implement mental health programming.
- Provide faculty and staff training on mental health topics.
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate, confidential records of counseling sessions and assessments.
- Document general notes for the student support team.
- Report significant student well-being concerns to appropriate personnel.
- Adhere to Diocese of Raleigh Safe Environment guidelines.
Teamwork, Collaboration, and Professionalism
- Work with administrators, educators, and parents to provide proactive student mental health support.
- Maintain confidentiality while communicating student needs.
- Engage regularly with the student support team.
- Follow professional laws, policies, and ethical standards.
- Participate in community initiatives and school activities.
- Pursue ongoing professional development.
Other Duties
- Support advisory programming related to mental health.
- Moderate or co-moderate the Mental Wellness student organization.

Physical Demands
- This position requires the ability to sit for extended periods, communicate effectively (verbally and in writing), and use standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and printers.
