Summary Objective

The purpose of this position is to operate light, medium and heavy vehicles, power tools, trucks, snow plows, salt and brine spreaders, grass cutting and other equipment. Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of streets, sidewalks, vacant lots and alleys.
This class works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Operates dump trucks, pick-up, stake bed, snow removal and treatment equipment, mowing equipment, roller, concrete saw, whacker, air hammer compressor, tamper, street repair and lane painting equipment, chainsaw, and other tools and equipment.

  • Transports tools, equipment and personnel to and from worksites and removes equipment from trucks.

  • Performs street maintenance labor duties as required according to seasons, needs, and division priorities.

  • Heats liquid asphalt, patches potholes, cleans equipment and ensures that tack pot and hose are cleaned and in proper working order for subsequent jobs.

  • Assists in the erection of closures and operations of pumping plants.

  • Performs maintenance work on flood wall, fills holes on levee and cuts grass.

  • Maintains and makes minor repairs to equipment and cleans streets, buildings and equipment.

  • Logs and keeps records of daily operations.

  • Operates skid steers, tractors, roll-offs, bucket trucks, packers, sweepers, water and vac trucks and other light and medium equipment and hand-held tools.

  • Boards access to vacant buildings and structures.

  • Collects, transports and disposes of dead animals and other debris from roadways.

  • Pours and smooth concrete and installs guardrails and pipe.

  • Cleans vacant lots picking up debris and cutting grass.

  • Loads vehicles on pay loader for the purpose of cleaning up trash and debris from vacant lots.

  • Performs all snow operations as needed, to include dispatching/monitoring routes, brining, salting, and plowing.

  • Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Graduation or GED equivalent.

  • One (1) year of experience operating trucks, working with motor vehicles or small tools and equipment or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state Class A Commercial Driver’s License with an acceptable driving history.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement or obtain within three months of employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT)

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:

    • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.

    • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.

    • Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.

    • Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.

    • Traffic; Moving machinery.
