Council Description

The Seattle Education Association (SEA) is a diverse 6,000-member Local/Council comprised of certificated, paraprofessional, and office professionals – including substitutes – who work for Seattle Public Schools. SEA is a member-driven and member-led organization that works with a high degree of collaboration and teamwork between SEA staff and leaders.


The SEA is the collective voice of educators working in union where members across all identities are full participants in decisions to address the legacy and continuing impacts of systemic racism in order to improve educator working conditions and transform our schools.

Responsibilities:

  • Greet visitors; direct phone calls and emails.
  • Edit, review, and occasionally create member communications, ensuring timely and accurate distribution.
  • Edit, review, and occasionally create external communications, including managing platforms such as WordPress, Facebook, and Instagram.
  • Assist governance and staff with meetings and trainings.
  • Organize and maintain digital files in SharePoint to ensure easy access and version control for team materials.
  • Follow records retention guidelines to archive or dispose of materials according to WEA’s retention policy.
  • Assist with basic office organization, including monitoring supply levels and setting up meeting spaces as needed.
  • Process all mail, including school mail pick up and delivery.
  • Support upkeep of the SEA Calendar.
  • Accurately/efficiently enter and audit membership records.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Demonstrated success as an administrative professional or equivalent experience.
  • Proficient at PC compatible programs (e.g., Microsoft Word, Teams, Outlook, Excel, and Publisher).
  • Experience with database software.
  • Proficient with web page and desktop publishing software.
  • Demonstrated clerical skills including word processing, filing, proofreading, document retrieval, creating spreadsheets, and screening calls.
  • Ability to generate documents and data with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to compose, draft, edit, proof, and produce quality professional correspondence.
  • Ability to learn membership data system (NEA360), generate database reports based on user requests, and understand how data is used in the decision-making process.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including experience in dealing with members.
  • Proven success in building and maintaining cooperative and productive relationships with diverse individuals, internally and externally.
  • Self-starter with demonstrated initiative and flexibility with changing priorities.
  • Well-organized with attention to detail; ability to effectively prioritize work.
  • Ability to keep sensitive information confidential.
  • Ability to confront and resolve conflict constructively.
  • Ability to understand the relevance and importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion both internally and externally, and the impact that a diverse workforce has on creativity and innovation.
  • Must support and help advance the WEA mission, goals, core values, and priorities.
  • Work in person in the Seattle Education Association office in Seattle, WA.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with meeting, conference, and/or event planning.
  • Experience with mail merge.
  • Experience with various electronic communications.
  • Experience in public education, unions, or related employment.

Supervision

The successful incumbent will function as a member of the Seattle Education Association staff and the Advocacy & Organizing Center of the Washington Education Association. The Field Assistant III will report to the Executive Director of the Seattle Education Association.
