Council Description

The Tacoma Education Association (TEA) represents more than 2,000 certificated educators, office professionals, and professional technical staff in the Tacoma School District. The Field Assistant III works with three other Washington Education Association (WEA) staff and full-time elected local union leaders in the TEA office, in addition to supporting WEA’s statewide programs. WEA is Washington’s largest union.


Job Summary

This position provides general administrative and clerical accounting support for the Tacoma UniServ Council/TEA office while actively engaged in organizing WEA members and building strong local unions.

Responsibilities:

  • Primary office contact; coordinate office mail and phone communications.
  • Organize and maintain council calendar and scheduling.
  • Provide in-office technical support.
  • Assist with association-wide electronic communications, including emails, texts, social media, and the TEA website.
  • Create TEA promotional and membership materials.
  • Support membership organizing and recruitment.
  • Support TEA political and legislative programs.
  • Provide internal TEA election support.
  • Provide event and meeting planning and support, including membership meetings and professional development.
  • Coordinate and manage substitute/release time.
  • Assist other staff with collecting, recording, and maintaining information about membership dues, dues status, and demographics as needed.
  • Help process and maintain membership records.
  • Assist other staff with council budget and financial work as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Experience in bookkeeping, accounting, or administrative assignments involving advanced record keeping and knowledge of accounting practices and accepted accounting procedures.
  • Competence with Microsoft 365 and accounting software.
  • Experience with maintaining email lists, updating websites, and social media.
  • Possess strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience providing exemplary customer service, including experience in dealing with members or customers.
  • Demonstrated history and/or experience working with communities of color and/or with historically underrepresented groups.
  • Ability to keep sensitive information confidential.
  • Strong organizational skills; self-starter; proficient at multi-tasking.
  • Work in person in the Tacoma EA office in Tacoma, WA.

Supervision

The successful incumbent will function as a member of the Advocacy & Organizing Center and will report to the Advocacy and Organizing Field Manager or Director.
