JOB SUMMARY:


Field technician to perform forestry field work, including measuring tree biomass (forest mensuration), leaf area, and height. Downloads, processes, and performs quality control on data from automated sensors, including eddy covariance towers, sap flow systems and groundwater wells. Other duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES:


60% - Essential - Fieldwork: Census established forest plots. Download data from automated sensors, including eddy covariance and sap flow systems. Climb towers to clean sensors and perform maintenance. Follow safety protocols, proper care for tools and samples. Travel to field sites within ~2 hours drive of Baruch Institute.

35% - Essential - Data processing: Processes downloaded data and archives into appropriate file locations. Performs quality assurance and quality control procedures by running appropriate software and interpreting reports. Reports results to supervisor and lab group.

5% - Essential - Outreach: Participates in extension and outreach events, educating the public about science.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:


Education - Bachelor's Degree - Related field and work experience directly related to the assigned research area; or a high school diploma and advanced journey-level work experience in a clinical or research setting.
Work Experience - 1+ years previous experience conducting ecological or forestry fieldwork.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:


Education - Bachelor's Degree - Forestry, Wildlife, Biology, or related field.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


Stand for prolonged period
Walk or move about
Use hands or feet to operate or handle machinery, equipment, etc
Ascend or descend (i.e. stairs, ladder)
Position self to accomplish task (i.e. stoop, kneel, crawl)
Communicate, converse, give direction, express oneself
Recognize or inspect visually
Move, transport, raise or lower
Extends hands or arms in any direction
Perceive, observe, clarity of vision

Field gear can weigh up to 40# and require transport of 1-2 miles. Must be willing to climb research towers to 120 feet height, after proper safety training and with proper gear, which is provided.

Exposure to heat or cold
Wet or humid
Overnight Travel - Occasional
Exposure to bio-hazards (i.e. blood, bodily fluids)

Snakes and potentially dangerous wildlife. Work can be muddy and dirty.

Standard Hours: 37.5

COMPENSATION INFORMATION


Anticipated Hourly Rate: $28.00


Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines.


ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL LEVEL


Normal Operations

Required to follow emergency facility closure directives, and not normally expected work on-site during emergency situations.
