Job Summary:
We are seeking a hands-on and strategic Financial Controller to lead our accounting department and oversee all financial operations for a growing multi-location retail business. This role is crucial to building a scalable, efficient, and accurate accounting infrastructure. Because our current accounting systems and processes are in a start-up status, the ideal candidate will be expected to provide strong input, ideas, and leadership in designing, improving, and standardizing procedures across the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily operations of the accounting department, including AP/AR, general ledger, bank reconciliations, and financial reporting
- Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff (accountants, clerks, etc.)
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes to ensure timely and accurate reporting
- Lead the creation, documentation, and implementation of scalable accounting processes and internal controls
- Provide strategic input and solutions to help shape the structure and efficiency of our accounting operations
- Prepare and analyze financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and variance reports
- Oversee cash flow management, store-level performance analysis, and consolidated reporting
- Partner with executive leadership on financial planning, operational strategy, and growth initiatives
- Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, and banking institutions
- Oversee the evaluation and implementation of accounting software and reporting systems
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and all financial reporting regulations
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
- CPA or CMA strongly preferred
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with 3+ years of experience specifically in a Financial Controller role
- Experience in a start-up, scaling, or multi-location environment strongly preferred
- Proven ability to implement and improve accounting systems and processes
- Deep knowledge of GAAP and financial compliance
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage)
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving ability
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment where change is frequent
