Located on South Main Street in Blacksburg, VA, Vintage Cellar is a locally owned and operated specialty beverage retailer with a 40-year history. We’re known for our extensive selection of wines and craft beers, including local, regional, and imported offerings, as well as specialty food items like cheeses, hard meats, and chocolates. Job Summary
We’re seeking a dynamic, hands-on General Manager to lead store operations, support team development, and grow the business. This role requires a collaborative leader with strong retail experience and a passion for customer service, product knowledge, and community engagement.
The General Manager will work closely with the founder/owner to support a vibrant, community-centered retail experience. A potential buyout opportunity may be considered for the right long-term candidate.
Key ResponsibilitiesCustomer Service
- Lead by example in delivering outstanding, knowledgeable service
- Handle customer inquiries, special requests, and occasional complaints professionally
- Organize and host tastings, educational events, and seasonal promotions
Operational Management
- Oversee daily store operations to ensure efficiency and customer satisfaction
- Manage scheduling, opening/closing procedures, and compliance with alcohol sales regulations
- Create and update training materials and operational guidelines
Inventory and Merchandising
- Assist in managing inventory levels, ordering, receiving, and rotation
- Ensure staff are trained in shipping and receiving
- Collaborate with suppliers to maintain a high-quality and diverse product selection
- Implement merchandising strategies to drive sales and enhance the customer experience
Financial Management
- Monitor and manage P&L, including margins, expenses, and shrinkage
- Prepare and analyze sales reports to guide decision-making
- Set and manage pricing, promotions, and markdowns in coordination with the owner
Team Leadership
- Recruit, train, and schedule staff, including part-time workers
- Promote a positive, inclusive team culture grounded in trust and performance
- Conduct regular performance reviews and provide clear, constructive feedback
Marketing & Community Engagement
- Support and help develop marketing strategies that increase visibility and sales
- Represent Vintage Cellar at community events and maintain partnerships
QualificationsEducation & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent professional experience
- Minimum of 5 years in retail management, ideally in beverage retail
Skills & Attributes
- Strong leadership and team-building abilities
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Proficiency with inventory software and POS systems (familiarity with Bottles POS and City Hive a plus)
- Passion for customer service and product education
- Knowledge of wines, beers, and spirits - or a strong willingness to learn
- Strategic mindset with a focus on growth, adaptability, and compliance
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
- Standing for extended periods
- Bending, reaching, and moving throughout the store
