HM183 Tanker Inspector & Maintenance Technician

Position Summary:
The HM183 Tanker Inspector & Maintenance Technician is responsible for conducting DOT-required inspections on cargo tankers and performing maintenance and repair work to ensure tankers are compliant, roadworthy, and safe for operation. This position plays a key role in upholding regulatory compliance and the safe operation of hazmat transport equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform required HM183 inspections including:
- Visual inspections
- Leakage tests
- Pressure tests
- Thickness tests
- Internal inspections
- Lining inspections (if applicable)
- Ensure inspections are completed in accordance with DOT regulations and industry standards.
- Complete and maintain proper documentation and inspection reports; apply appropriate test markings and inspection decals.
- Diagnose mechanical and structural issues on tanker trailers and perform repairs as needed, including:
- Valves, fittings and piping systems
- Suspension, brakes and hubs
- Lights, wiring and probes
- Air bags and air systems
- Weld repairs and structural reinforcements
- Bumper and fender repairs
- Landing gear
- Assist with preventative maintenance and periodic service of tanker trailers.
- Communicate findings and repair needs to management and maintain accurate service records.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area; properly store tools and equipment.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required; technical training or certifications preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in tanker trailer maintenance or DOT inspections.
- HM183 Inspector certification or ability to become certified (in-house or third-party training).
- Knowledge of DOT regulations and industry safety standards.
- Proficient in using diagnostic tools, hand tools, and repair equipment.
- Welding and fabrication skills are a strong plus.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, work orders, and technical documents.
- Strong attention to detail and safety compliance.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs., climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
- Must be able to stand, crouch, bend, and work in various weather conditions.

Pay: $20.00 - $35.00 per hour
