Pay rate of $19.941 per hour. Employees may be promoted to a Construction Technician II position at a rate of $22.938 per hour upon acquiring the necessary certifications and demonstration of skills.

Job Duties:
Maintains field notes; calculates levels, grades, elevations, curves, and other measurements; acts as survey-leader on less complex surveys, such as cross-sections, establishing center line, setting blue tops, seeding, levels, and final measurements; may temporarily serve as a survey-leader of complex surveys in the absence of the survey crew leader.
Inspects and documents materials and work constructed as part of projects, such as culverts, bridges, earthwork, capital facilities, asphaltic concrete paving, portland cement concrete paving, fencing, landscaping, guardrail, lighting, signing, traffic control, along with other related items constructed as part of hwy construction projects to ensure conformance to the project plans and specifications.
Shuts down projects for safety violations; monitors and reports other violations to the next higher-level authority.
Operates precision surveying equipment as a survey crew member; cleans, maintains, and calibrates measurement instruments or equipment as needed.
Prepares, maintains, and submits inspection reports and records on inspection assignments using appropriate computer software and related databases.
Enters quantities of pay items; maintains field notes; maintains project records; checks final records for method of measurement, accuracy, and completeness.
Examines field records on completed projects to verify compliance with specifications and contracts, as part of a project-wide auditing process.
Assists in the winter with plowing operations to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
Construction Technicians are responsible primarily for the inspection and verification of the quality and quantities of work for heavy highway construction projects. A person in this role will be expected to perform various materials testing routines on concrete, asphalt, soils, and other materials as required. This position also requires individuals to verify the location and quality of work matches the project plan set and contract. To this end, successful individuals will need to be able to read and interpret plans, contracts, and standard specifications as a regular part of their job. Often this will also include performing various survey related tasks utilizing rods, levels, tape measures, and GPS equipment. Technicians will also record and maintain accurate documentation of quantities installed by the contractor as well as a diary of the construction activities as they occur throughout the day. All official records are maintained digitally and technicians will be expected to utilize computers and various programs daily. Individuals will be expected to be able to work both as part of a team as well as individually with minimal supervision. This position assists with snow removal on highways and the interstate. Individuals will be required to operate snowplows during winter events.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements / Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Highway Construction Technician II: Experience in performing activities pertinent to construction work such as surveying, materials testing, or field inspections. OR Coursework or training in construction surveying, materials testing, or inspections practices, and in using associated instruments and equipment. Also, applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license.
Highway Construction Technician I: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in surveying, road construction, materials testing, record keeping, trigonometry, and geometry. Experience in the operation of heavy equipment or snow removal equipment. Computer experience including word processing, spreadsheets, SiteManager, GEOPAK and MicroStation software.
Other: Must possess or be able to obtain a Class A or B CDL within 90 days of hire through our in-house CDL training program. Costs to obtain the permit will be paid for by the department. This position may require overnight travel. Regular and reliable attendance is required. In order to be hired at the Highway Construction Technician II level, applicants must have passed the NDOT Math, Highway Plan Reading, and Bridge Plan reading courses or have an Associate’s degree in civil engineering technology or a related field which may be substituted for the completion of the NDOT courses. Upon hire, you will be provided with the required training material. This is a self-paced training and once completed provides for promotion to the Highway Construction Tech II level. Typically, this is accomplished within the first 6 months of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing: read and interpret plans and specifications; perform mathematical calculations. Skill in surveying, materials testing, construction inspection, and/or operating equipment, computers and associated software. Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds, climb, bend, stoop, walk long distances and work long hours in outdoor temperature extremes. Must be able to report to work outside scheduled work hours for snow and other highway emergencies within 30 minutes under normal driving conditions.
Ability to work and communicate with a team. Ability to work with minimal supervision, be self-motivated, and hold high integrity. Trainable. Ability and willingness to learn and accept challenges by learning and adjusting to new technology and processes. Quality/results-oriented sense of urgency in the performance of duties. Ability to work safely and demonstrate safe and reliable practices and behaviors. Ability to interact in a positive manner and treat co-workers and supervisors with dignity and respect, work to resolve conflicts, and make good decisions using sound judgment, processes, and purpose.
