Job Title: Authorization Specialist
The Insurance Verification & Authorization Specialist plays a vital role in supporting the clinical and operational success of our EEG services. This position is responsible for verifying insurance coverage, obtaining prior authorizations, managing referrals, and ensuring accurate and timely communication between payors, patients, providers, and Synergy Reps.
Job Duties:
- Verify patients' insurance coverage for EEG services via phone and online portals
- Confirm deductibles, co-pays, out-of-pocket costs, and pre-authorization requirements
- Obtain and follow up on prior authorizations from commercial and government payers for diagnostic and procedural services
- Review insurance eligibility and benefits for accuracy and completeness
- Monitor and track the progress of referrals, ensuring timely care and proper documentation
- Maintain accurate and complete patient records in electronic health systems (EHR)
- Ensure appointments are scheduled within valid referral/authorization timeframes
- Communicate clearly with patients, referring physicians, and insurance companies to gather necessary documentation
- Explain insurance benefits, coverage limitations, and out-of-pocket expenses to patients
- Receive and process medical records requests while adhering to HIPAA and privacy regulations
- Ensure secure and confidential handling of patient data
- Collaborate with healthcare staff to resolve issues in the referral and authorization process
- Stay current with payer requirements and changes to authorization workflows
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Prior experience in healthcare, particularly in insurance verification, authorization, or patient coordination
- Strong knowledge of in-network vs. out-of-network insurance coverage and pre-authorization requirements
- Familiarity with medical terminology and EEG procedures is a plus
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- Proficiency with EHR systems and general computer use
- Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
- Knowledge of HIPAA and healthcare compliance standards
