Job Summary

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Librarian - Youth Services is responsible for the system-wide development, coordination, and delivery of innovative and inclusive library programs, collections, and services for children, teens, families, and caregivers. This position emphasizes outreach and community engagement, ensuring equitable access to high-quality, developmentally appropriate library resources both within branches and through external partnerships. The role requires building and maintaining strong relationships with educational institutions, early childhood organizations, and community-based agencies to foster literacy, lifelong learning, and community involvement, especially among underserved populations.

Essential Job Functions

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Outreach and Community Engagement:
  • Develop and lead outreach programs at schools, childcare centers, and community venues.
  • Build relationships with educators, agencies, and local partners to broaden access to library services.
  • Represent the library at community events, fairs, and meetings to promote engagement and awareness.
  • Create and implement strategies to reach underserved youth populations.

Program Planning and Delivery:
  • Plan and present early literacy programs, STEM/STEAM activities, summer reading initiatives, and other educational events.
  • Design dynamic and inclusive programming that engages children and teens both in and out of the library.
  • Collaborate with library staff to ensure programs reflect the diversity and needs of the community.

Collection Development:
  • Select, evaluate, and maintain youth collections in various formats.
  • Analyze usage and identify collection gaps; recommend acquisitions and conduct weeding as needed.

Customer Service and Reader Support:
  • Assist patrons, including youth and caregivers, in accessing materials, digital content, and advisory services.
  • Promote the use of digital resources and library technologies relevant to youth services.

Evaluation and Continuous Improvement:
  • Collect and analyze data to measure program effectiveness and inform future planning.
  • Stay current with trends in youth services, outreach methods, and library technologies.
  • Contribute to grant writing and reporting for outreach-related funding opportunities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The Librarian - Youth Services must have good vision and hearing with or without correction. The role requires extended periods of walking, standing and handling materials. Additionally, the position requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally and 10 pounds frequently. The capacity to push a fully loaded book cart and perform tasks that involve reaching above shoulder level, bending, and squatting is vital. The role also involves the ability to drive a standard-size van for outreach and program activities. The role involves frequent travel to offsite locations and may include setting up program materials in indoor and outdoor environments. Candidates must be able to accommodate a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends, based on outreach needs.


ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND WORK HAZARDS:
Work is performed in varied environments, including library branches, schools, community centers, and outdoor public spaces. The role may involve exposure to weather conditions such as extreme heat and rain during offsite programming and community events. Safety protocols are followed in all settings, and the position requires adaptability to dynamic and sometimes busy or high-traffic environments. Some areas of the library may have high dust levels, which could trigger allergic reactions. The work involves frequent use of a computer and other equipment, which may lead to vision or hand/arm strain. There may also be exposure to certain cleaners used for mending and cleaning books.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates should possess a solid foundational background that demonstrates their ability to engage with the responsibilities of the role effectively.

  • Graduation from an accredited two (2) year college or university in education, child development, literature, library and information science or related field required. Four (4) year degree is preferred. Relevant experience, training or technical certifications may substitute for preferred college degree.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience developing and delivering programs for youth in a library or community setting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, and the ability to connect with various audiences.
  • Knowledge of early literacy, youth literature, and digital library resources.
  • Demonstrated outreach experience and the ability to build community partnerships.
  • Independent and team-oriented work ethic with value on accountability.
  • Proficient in digital tools, library technology, and social media.
  • Strategic with collection development for youth materials.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and/or weekends.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and good driving record.

Driving Position – Operating County vehicles and/or equipment is a primary function of this position.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING: This position requires a physical, drug testing, driver's license verification and level 2 background screening which includes fingerprinting.
