Position Overview

The Paving Laborer is responsible for many laborer duties including shoveling and raking asphalt and operating a variety of small equipment for groundwork and paving purposes.


Wage Range: $21 - $25 per hour, based on experience


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Observe distribution of paving material to adjust shoveling and raking to correct low or high spots for workers to add or remove material.
  • Lay out guidelines for paving according to written specifications, using string or spray paint.
  • Light burners or start heating units of machines and regulate screed temperatures and asphalt flow rates.
  • Fill tanks, hoppers, or machines with paving materials.
  • Install dies, cutters, and extensions to screeds onto machines, using hand tools.
  • May perform other related duties, such as adding or removing screed extensions, installing, or removing automatic devices, grade log or other accessories associated with the machine.
  • Coordinate/spot truck dumping and shovel blacktop.
  • Setup and tear down equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree GED is preferred.
  • Previous related experience in the construction field is a plus.


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Standard Driver’s License is preferred.

  • Able to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and hear.
  • Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Able to work in all weather conditions.
  • The employee is frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands.
  • The employee is occasionally required to crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hand and arms above their shoulders.
  • Must be able to exert 10-20 lbs. constantly to move objects, 25-50 lbs. of force frequently, and 50-100 lbs. of force occasionally.
