Job Summary
The Phlebotomist - Clinics is responsible for collecting and processing blood and other specimens from patients in an outpatient clinic setting. This role ensures accurate specimen collection, proper labeling, and timely transportation of samples to the laboratory while maintaining patient safety and comfort. The Phlebotomist follows all infection control, safety, and regulatory standards to ensure high-quality specimen collection and processing.
Essential Functions
- Collects blood specimens via venipuncture and capillary collection, ensuring proper technique and patient comfort.
- Labels, processes, and prepares specimens for laboratory testing following established protocols.
- Ensures accurate patient identification and maintains proper documentation in electronic health records (EHR) and laboratory information systems (LIS).
- Maintains specimen integrity by following proper handling, storage, and transportation procedures.
- Provides excellent patient service, explaining procedures, and addressing patient concerns to ensure a positive experience.
- Follows infection control and biohazard safety procedures to minimize risk and maintain a safe clinical environment.
- Monitors and maintains phlebotomy supplies, ensuring an adequate inventory for daily operations.
- Assists in quality control processes, including equipment maintenance and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Collaborates with clinical and laboratory teams to ensure efficient workflow and timely specimen processing.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Complies with all policies and standards.
Qualifications
- 0-1 years of experience in phlebotomy required
- Experience working in an outpatient clinic, laboratory, or healthcare setting preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of phlebotomy procedures, specimen handling, and laboratory safety standards.
- Proficiency in using phlebotomy equipment and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
- Excellent patient-care and communication skills to ensure comfort and safety during procedures.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately label and track specimens.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical environment.
- Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality.
Licenses and Certifications
- CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification required
- BCLS - Basic Life Support
