Job Announcement
Fairfax County's Planning Division plans the long-term growth of Fairfax County. The division maintains and updates the county’s Comprehensive Plan and plan map and evaluates land use and development proposals for conformity with the Comprehensive Plan and measures related environmental, development and public facility impacts. Prepares various planning and policy studies which explore development, land use, environmental, heritage resources, and public facility issues, and offers recommendations for future direction. Assists in the development of the county’s Capital Improvement Program. This position is a senior environmental planner within the division and serves as staff liaison to the board-appointed Wetlands Board, and manages or performs complex environmental planning activities, formulates environmental policy recommendations, and provides interpretations of the county’s Comprehensive Plan relating to environmental topics.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
-
Master's degree in planning, environmental sustainability, urban forestry, or another closely related field.
- Professional experience in planning, environmental policy, and tidal wetlands functions, native tidal vegetation, and ecology.
- Experience working in a local government planning office and supporting public boards and commissions.
- Experience with stormwater planning/water quality issues, acoustical analysis, Chesapeake Bay regulations and/or urban forestry is desirable.
- Professional experience in project management, presentation, and group facilitation skills; strong written and oral communication/presentation abilities.
- Experience using word processing, database, and GIS software.
- Ability to prioritize multiple deadlines.
- Ability to work independently.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position is primarily sedentary; however, employee may be required to do some walking, standing, bending and carrying of items under 15 lbs. in weight. Work assignments will also require the employee to make site visits. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
SELECTION PROCEDURE:
