Principal Risk Specialist, Payments Governance Infrastructure & Monitoring - Hybrid

The Enterprise Payments Governance and Oversight team is seeking a dynamic associate who will play a pivotal role within the Payments Governance & Infrastructure team, to support the future of payments governance and oversight for the enterprise. The Enterprise Payments Governance and Oversight team sits within the Enterprise Payments organization in the Retail Bank. The team is tasked with executing governance and oversight of end-to-end payments strategy, operations, and risk management for all payment types across the enterprise. In this role, you will be at the forefront of payments, developing solutions to remediate some of the biggest payments-related challenges while also building upon existing business-as-usual practices.

This role offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with a diverse group of internal stakeholders, including senior leaders across Operations, Risk Management, and Product. You will be responsible for executing robust governance routines, conducting comprehensive monitoring activities to assess the health of end-to-end payment types, and providing critical insights to senior leadership. Furthermore, you will drive key strategic initiatives aligned with the evolving priorities of the Enterprise Payments organization through effective project and program management. You will be part of a high-performing team that fosters professional growth and encourages excellence.

General Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver comprehensive monthly, quarterly, and annual reports detailing payment operational performance, risk posture, and progress on key strategic initiatives.

  • Proactively monitor and analyze payments-related issues, events, and risks to derive actionable insights, identify trends, and recommend robust risk mitigation strategies.

  • Support lines of business in demonstrating adherence to payment risk standards

  • Lead and manage payments-related initiatives, encompassing strategic development, governance enhancements, and oversight activities.

Location: This role is hybrid, where you will be expected to spend 3 days per week working in office and the remainder of the week working virtually from Richmond, VA or McLean, VA

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Military experience

  • At least 3 years of experience in risk management

  • At least 4 years of experience in banking or the financial industry

  • At least 2 years of process or project management experience

  • At least 2 years of experience using Google Suite or Microsoft Office

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of experience working in payments

  • At least 5 years of experience in risk management

  • At least 5 years of process or project management experience

  • Accredited ACH Professional (AAP) certification or Accredited Payments Risk Professional (APRP) certification

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

McLean, VA: $117,300 - $133,900 for Principal Risk Specialist

Richmond, VA: $106,700 - $121,700 for Principal Risk Specialist


Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
