About Us
Our team investigates the fundamental principles that govern the behavior of large models, building the core tools and infrastructure necessary for deep scientific inquiry.
The Role
We are seeking a senior Research Engineer to take a leading role in designing and evolving our core research ecosystem. This individual will act as a key engineering partner to researchers, driving the development of our shared codebase and enabling ambitious, large-scale experiments with the potential for broad impact across the organization.
Key responsibilities:
- Drive the design, evolution, and long-term vision for a research codebase, ensuring its stability, simplicity, and suitability for scientific inquiry.
- Lead engineering efforts for large-scale model pre-training experiments, designing and implementing robust solutions for distributed training.
- Act as a subject matter expert on engineering best practices, championing code quality, robust design, and effective tooling.
- Partner with researchers to translate complex research ideas into practical implementations and unblock ambitious research directions.
- Identify opportunities to generalize our tools for wider adoption.
About You
In order to set you up for success as a Research Engineer at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:
- BS/MS in Computer Science or related field
- Expert-level proficiency in Python and JAX
- Proven experience designing, building, and pre-training LLMs and large-scale deep learning models
In addition, the following would be an advantage:
- Deep understanding of Transformer architectures
- Experience leading complex, multi-quarter engineering projects in a research environment
- Demonstrated ability to drive engineering best practices (e.g., design docs, code reviews) and influence technical direction
