UChicago STEM Education’s work comprises Tool Development and School Support Services. Separately, each of these components is a necessary part of improving STEM education. Within UChicago STEM Education, they inform one another and constitute a rigorous, comprehensive approach to supporting high quality education.

Job Summary
The School Development Manager uses best practices and knowledge for the development of programs in early childhood, primary, and/or secondary educational settings. The School Development Manager plays a lead role in designing and implementing STEM-focused programs and materials that contribute to school development and/or professional development of principals, teachers, and other education leaders. This individual manages a small team of professional staff responsible for coaching and supporting STEM curricula and programs that promote student learning and development.
Responsibilities
  • Oversees the work with individual schools, small groups of schools, and small to medium sized school districts with implementation of tools and resources that promote high quality teaching and learning in mathematics and other curricular areas.
  • Supervises a small team of staff and is accountable for their performance while mentoring future leaders.
  • Develops local leaders to provide staff development experiences for the teachers in their buildings, including preparing them to chair grade-level meetings, coach and mentor individual teachers, support reluctant teachers, conduct school-level workshops that focus on increasing teachers' STEM content knowledge and pedagogical understanding, and design and carry out programs of parent education.
  • Manages school district relationships and is the liason between school districts, principalsand teachers to work toward meeting set goals and achieving student success.
  • Manages project development and existing projects, taking a lead on project budgeting and reporting.
  • Plays a key role in working with school-level leaders; helping them plan and carry out coherent programs of teacher development to support of the implementation of high quality teaching and learning.
  • Identifies and communicates with local leaders about key features and principles of mathematics teaching and learning, common pitfalls in its implementation, and solutions to common problems.
  • Writes and delivers professional development for a wide variety of school districts and grade levels focused on implementation of high-quality STEM curricula and more general topics related to high quality teaching and learning.
  • Collaborates externally as a school partner.
  • Executes foundation relations while supporting proposal development and writing.
  • Manages the academic and para-curricular programs by providing a range of services, including serving as editor for publications; serving on selection committees for select grants; and providing leadership on matters of governance and curriculum.
  • Is accountable for the implementation of new developments in curriculum and student activity policy.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience:
Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications
Education:
  • Master's degree in math, teaching, education, or a related field.
  • Doctorate (Ed.D. or Ph.D.) in primary or secondary education or a related field.
Experience:
  • Using a variety of techniques for teacher education, including case studies, professional readings, mentoring, coaching, lesson study, teaching model lessons and teacher study groups.
  • Implementing Everyday Mathematics.
  • Leading a team.
Technical Knowledge or Skills:
  • Advanced knowledge of instructional methodologies.
  • Advanced knowledge of professional development strategies, including coaching.
  • Develop programs, curricula, lesson plans and assessment tools.
  • Use assessment data to make decisions to improve instruction and professional development.
  • Presentation skills.
Preferred Competencies
  • Understand the principles of adult earning.
  • Write, design and draft materials that district leaders can use to conduct workshops and otherwise support EM implementation.
  • Work independently and as part of a team, with little supervison: possess a self-motivated disposition: identify opportunities for improvement, while obtaining key objectives and reaching desired outcomes.
  • Work effectively and diplomatically with colleagues , school leaders , teachers and students.
