Summary

The Training Specialist in the Senior Capstone Design Program will have an active role in educating, training, certifying, and mentoring mechanical and aerospace engineering undergraduate and graduate students on the proper operation of machine shop, woodshop, and welding equipment. The Training Specialist provides technical support on projects and gives training presentations for the design and fabrication of Senior Capstone Design and Enterprise projects.

Responsibilities and Essential Duties

• Provide instruction, training, certification, and mentoring students in machine shop practice and operation.
• Conduct safety orientation for students working in the shops.
• Provide general laboratory support in machine shops, carpentry, woodworking, welding, plumbing, mechanical, and automotive areas.
• Maintain inventory for shops including ordering parts and tools.
• Provide technical support for projects including training, fabrication, and assembly.
• Participate in laboratory and shop safety inspections to identify any potential hazards to personnel or university property.
• Conduct chemical inventories of shop areas.
• Participate in the development of safety procedures and training methods, including creation of documentation.
• Assist in shop development activities including planning, research, acquisition, installation, and setup of new machines.
• Provide technical support to faculty research projects at remote labs (APS, AERB, etc)
• Adhere to federal, state, and university regulations.
• Supervisory Responsibilities: May exercise supervision of shop attendants, teaching assistants, lab assistants, and student assistants.

 

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements) Associate’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, or related engineering and science fields, or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Required Experience

• At least two years of demonstrated work experience in constructing and troubleshooting mechanical systems.
• Practical experience in machine shop, carpentry, woodworking, welding, plumbing, mechanical, and automotive areas.
• Demonstrated experience in the operation of manual and CNC mills, manual and CNC lathes, band saws, grinders, chop saws, drill presses, sheet metal brakes and shears, and other devices commonly found in a machine shop.
• Working knowledge of computers and software in an office environment.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, or related engineering and science fields, or equivalent combination of education and experience from which knowledge and experience can be acquired.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

• Demonstrated ability to work with accuracy, precision, and attention to detail.
• Demonstrated welding capabilities including MIG, TIG, stick, oxyacetylene, and gas brazing.
• Demonstrated ability to solve problems and make decisions with limited supervision.
• Demonstrated ability to machine and/or fabricate components to a high level of quality, accuracy and detail.
• Demonstrated ability to read part and assembly prints and fabricate parts and assemblies according to the print.
• Demonstrated interpersonal, oral/written communication and customer service skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of individuals.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

• Experience in teaching shop procedures and machine operation to individuals and/or small groups.
• Demonstrated experience in the use of cnc routers including modeling and programming.
• Experience in the use of CAD/CAM software, such as Unigraphics NX
• Demonstrated knowledge of current laboratory safety and MIOSHA standards.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to meet Michigan Tech’s vehicle use requirements.

Language, Mathematics and/or Reasoning Skills

• Language Skills – Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). Ability to complete routine reports. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students or other employees.
• Mathematical Skills – Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to apply concepts such as trigonometry, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
• Reasoning Ability – Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of problems in standardized situations. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical, diagram, written, or oral form.

The employee is frequently exposed to fumes and/or airborne particles. The employee is regularly required to work near moving mechanical parts.
• The noise level in the work environment is moderate.

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment

Every employee at Michigan Technological University will receive the following three required trainings; additional training may be required by the department.

Required Departmental Training:
• Training/instruction on all machines and instruments in the labs and teaching classrooms where employee will work.
