Soil Yard Operator
The pay rate is $19.22/hr. This is a year round, full time position.
Schedule
Schedule is 40 hours/week with some overtime available in the spring.
Must be available to work every other Saturday during the months of March-October and every Saturday in our busiest month of May.
All 8 hour+ shifts include up to two 15 minute paid breaks and one 30 minute paid lunch break
General hours of operation are Monday-Friday 8-5 and Saturdays 9-1.
Closed on Saturdays November-February
Closed on Sundays year round
Responsibilities
This position requires a great degree of manual labor. Responsibilities include screening of compost, bagging of soil yard materials for resale, weekly maintenance of vermicompost production, customer service and heavy equipment operation. Work involves operating loaders, blowers, mechanical screeners, heat sealers and other equipment.
The Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient and effective operation of a front loader and screeners under the guidance of the Operations Manager. S/he/they performs technical work operating and maintaining equipment to produce compost and composted mulch from food waste, manure and mulch. Operator, under supervision of the Operations Manager, controls the combination of heat, moisture, and oxygen to ensure that the compost is safe and optimized for horticultural use.
Operator is also responsible for the mixing and movement of other materials and products, including but not limited to mulch blends, compost blends, soil blends, potting mixes, etc.
This position will also be customer-facing performing customer service and sales up to 30% of the time. Previous experience with Square point of sales terminal helpful but not required. Knowledge of all products and pricing will be essential to this position; such knowledge will be imparted through training.
Physical Requirements
Employee is subject to hazards associated with manure, food waste, mulch, used cooking oil, heavy mechanical equipment, and plant operations including working both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, fumes, odors, dusts, and mechanical greases and oils. Must have the ability to: walk, use both hands and legs, bend, kneel, lift.
Essential Duties and Tasks
Operates electric trommel screens and heat sealer with relation to bagging finished product. Use of hand and power equipment in the movement of materials.
Operates heavy equipment including front loaders, trucks, electric and gas motors, blowers, satellite screener, and other equipment related to composting and soil yard operations. Performs routine machine maintenance and keeps records of said maintenance.
Provides preventive maintenance care on a daily basis and also services loader at required intervals with extensive preventive maintenance procedures, makes minor repairs to equipment and machines, identifies when machines need maintenance from the manufacturer, manages larger repairs with approved mechanic shops
Sells materials to all customers through Square terminal, assists in loading purchased material, takes payment, sends invoices and maintains records.
Provides excellent customer service, works to retain and build client base
Assists with overall site maintenance including, but not limited to: trash pick-up, mowing/weed removal, and irrigation repair
Performs related duties as requested
Work is performed under general supervision and reviewed by observation, conference, and reviewing records for adherence to operations standards, instructions, and safety practices.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to be effective in customer service and sales
- Working knowledge of heavy equipment operations
- Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and of necessary
- safety precautions
- Considerable knowledge of the operation of heavy equipment including loaders,
- screeners, pumps, etc.
- Working knowledge of and to record and review written records.
- Ability to repeatedly step in and out of a front end loader
- Ability to frequently lift 50+ pounds
Minimum Training and Experience
- Minimum one year experience in customer service
- Minimum one year experience in the operation of heavy machinery and industrial
- equipment
- Minimum one year experience performing manual and outdoor labor
- Possession of a valid driver's license
