SWIM INSTRUCTOR
Part-Time, Non-Exempt Position; YMCA of Greater Nashua
Nashua and Merrimack branches
The part-time schedule is based on swim lesson terms. Weekdays and weekends.

Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, Swim Instructors create a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment while teaching swimming and water safety skills. Lessons are rooted in the Y’s national curriculum and are delivered in a way that supports achievement, builds relationships, and fosters a sense of belonging for all participants.
Key Responsibilities:
- Arrive prepared and be on the pool deck at least 10 minutes prior to your class start time.
- Teach lessons aligned with YMCA of the USA swim program standards.
- Create a welcoming environment by connecting with members and participants.
- Take class attendance, track progress, and complete evaluations for each session.
- Communicate clearly with parents and participants about class expectations, swim level outcomes, and progress.
- Ensure every child is safely released to a parent or guardian after class.
- Set up and clean up all equipment used during lessons.
- Maintain safety by enforcing pool rules and responding appropriately to incidents.
- Support the lifeguard team in the event of an emergency.
- Actively participate in required training and team meetings.
Qualifications:
- Minimum age: 16 years
- Ability to pass a swim skills assessment
- Clear communication skills and confidence speaking in active, often loud environments
- Friendly, patient, and encouraging demeanor
- Willingness to learn and follow Y swim instruction protocols
Preferred (not required—we’ll train you!):
- CPR, AED, and Basic First Aid certifications
- YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor (YSL) or Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
We’ll Train you In:
- Swimming lessons to help properly demonstrate and teach the proper technique of strokes (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Freestyle, Sidestroke &/or Elementary Backstroke)
- Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid * Preferred but not required.
- YSL or WSI swim lesson certification *Preferred but not required
