The Applied Science team in Maxar’s Insights Engineering organization is looking for an experienced Tech Lead Manager (TLM) to lead a small, dedicated team building new AI/ML capabilities. You’ll work on large scale satellite imagery processing pipelines, machine learning model training systems, remote sensing foundation models and much more. We have multiple potential opportunities across the following domains:
- MLOps
- Production modeling
- Machine learning R&D
- Data infrastructure
- Pipelines and orchestration
You’ll take nascent capabilities into production and continue to enhance them as part of a broader team dedicated to making the Maxar Insights Engine run. This is a hands-on role with a people management component and a tremendous opportunity for growth.

Day-to-day with your colleagues:
- You'll be responsible for building systems that support analytics production at scale. This includes building tools and processes using our core engineering building blocks and maturing prototypes into production-ready systems.
- You’ll own the deployment and operation of ML systems that support products like MGP Pro and Sentry.
- Driven by our product management partners, you’ll help develop algorithmic solutions to complex customer problems, creating machinery that delivers unparalleled geospatial insights.
- You’ll work on problems like change detection and spatiotemporal analytics while working with Maxar’s high resolution satellite imagery, as well as other remote sensing and geospatial data sources.
- Through collaboration with our Applications and Infrastructure teams, you’ll build software systems that are guaranteed to directly support user- and mission-critical workflows.
- You’ll serve as a people manager for a distributed team of approximately 5 staff, conducting 1:1s, enabling growth, and managing performance.
Requirements/Skills
Minimum Qualifications:
- Strong Python skills
- Adept at translating prototype capabilities into principled software built around sound data structures thoughtful design patterns.
- Experience in computer vision, cloud-based image processing workflows, machine learning, distributed computing, or similar domains.
- 8+ years of development experience.
- Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., Computer Science, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, etc.), or equivalent experience.
Desired Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in a related field (e.g., Computer Science, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, etc.), or equivalent experience

Recent experience with some of the following technologies and practices:
- MLOps tools (e.g., Kubeflow, Metaflow, WandB, etc.)
- Orchestration and deployment infrastructure like Kubernetes, Docker, and Argo Workflows
- AWS managed services, especially Lambdas/State Machines, Batch, EKS, and Cloudwatch
- IaC tools like Terraform, Ansible, and CloudFormation
- GitHub, GitLab, or any other Git tools
- Distributed computing frameworks like Dask, Ray, and Spark
- ML tools like PyTorch, HuggingFace, Scikit-Learn, and Lightning, etc.
- Database and storage technologies like PostgreSQL, S3, Iceberg etc.
- Experience building, managing, and engineering production pipelines associated with large scale geospatial datasets
- Knowledge of electro-optical and radar satellite image formation, radiometry, and image acquisition metadata
- Experience in multi-band image processing and modeling techniques
- Experience working with time-series geospatial data
- Understanding of Shape Up methodologies is a plus
- Prior experience with GCP is a plus

The successful candidate’s starting pay will fall within the salary range provided below and is determined based on job-related factors, including, but not limited to, the experience, qualifications, knowledge, skills, geographic work location, and market conditions. Candidates with the minimum necessary experience, qualifications, knowledge, and skillsets for the position should not expect to receive the upper end of the pay range.
- The base pay for this position within Colorado is: $120,000.00 - $200,000.00 annually.
- The base pay for this position within New Jersey is: $120,000.00 - $200,000.00 annually.
- The base pay for this position within the Washington, DC metropolitan area is: $132,000.00 - $220,000.00 annually.
- The base pay for this position within California is: $138,000.00 - $230,000.00 annually.
For all other states, we use geographic cost of labor as an input to develop market-driven ranges for our roles, and as such, each location where we hire may have a different range.
