BRIEF POSITION SUMMARY
Performs advanced (senior-level) grounds and building or minor maintenance work associated with grounds. Work involves caring for and maintaining the appearance of grounds and gardens, as well as maintaining and repairing groundskeeping tools, supplies, and equipment. May serve as a lead worker or escort providing direction to others. Reports to the Maintenance Manager and works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
WORK HOURS: Tuesday – Friday, 10 hours a day, 40 hours a week
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Mows, trims grass, edges and removes clippings from sidewalks, building entrances and roads; and trims, fertilizes, waters, removes, and plants trees and shrubs.
- Removes dirt, rubbish, and refuse from grounds, around buildings, and along fence lines.
- Repairs and performs preventive maintenance work on planters, parking lots, driveways, roads, fences, and sidewalks.
- Utilizes sprays, or spreads fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, or fungicides onto grass, shrubs, and trees, using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders.
- Performs limited landscaping work.
- Operates powered equipment such as mowers, edgers/weed eaters, leaf blowers, ground utility vehicles and associated equipment, chain saws, gas powered hedge trimmers, and pruning shears.
- Services, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance on groundskeeping equipment.
- Installs, maintains, and repairs sprinkler systems.
- Drives trucks and hauls materials, supplies, and dirt and retrieves fuel from service station using state fuel card.
- Oversees the inventory of groundskeeping tools, supplies, and equipment, ensuring that equipment is well maintained and accounted for.
- Performs quality assurance reviews with team lead, supervisor, or manager on work in progress and/or completed.
- May serve as a lead worker or escort of contractors providing direction to others.
- Conducts inspections of ground maintenance work.
- Participates in conducting equipment inspections, maintenance and evaluation for repair, replacement, or acquisition.
- Attends work regularly and observes approved work hours in accordance with agency state employee policies & procedures handbook.
- May be required to perform duty in support of national emergencies, disasters and other missions, to include holidays and weekends.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
- Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Two years’ experience in commercial groundskeeping work is required.
- Experience using Microsoft Office (such as Outlook, Word, or Excel) is required.
REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE:
- Valid driver's license is required. *If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident. A satisfactory driving record is required for operating state or personal vehicles to conduct agency business.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Background Investigation. Selected candidate must pass federal security background investigation. The process includes a National Agency Check and Inquiry (NACI) and fingerprinting. New employees must complete and sign the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Form SF85. Completed forms are submitted to the OPM for the background investigations.
- Eligibility to Work in the U.S. The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 requires all new employees to present proof of eligibility to work in the United States within three (3) days of being hired. The Texas Military Department participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each new employee's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization. All offers of employment are contingent upon the candidate having and maintaining legal authorization to work in the United States. Failure to present such authorization within the time specified by the U.S. Department of Labor will result in the offer being rescinded.
- Sponsorship. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

PHYSICAL/WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is typically performed in outdoor settings that may be hot, humid, dirty, cold, and in direct sunlight. Position will require incumbent to work in tight spaces, high noise areas, and restricted access zones. Position requires the ability to lift, carry, move and/or set up equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds. May require periodic travel for training, both in and out of state. Duty hours are primarily Tuesday-Friday, 6:00 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. but may require extended duty days if workload requires.
