JOB TITLE: Trainmaster, Train & Engine Dept (T&E)
REPORTS TO: Vice President and Chief Operating Officer
SALARY: $120,000 + (Commensurate with Experience and Education)
HOURS: Full-time; EXEMPT
POSITION SUMMARY: Our Trainmaster is responsible for ensuring that all railroad freight and passenger train operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all relevant regulations and standards with the ultimate goal of protecting the health and safety of employees and contractors assigned to build, inspect, and maintain railroad track and structures, as well as the health and safety of passengers and the general public. Our trains operate in Southeastern Massachusetts, from Framingham down to Cape Cod. Daily reporting location is typically Taunton, Onset or Hyannis.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage the T&E Department's weekly, 3-month, 6-month, 1-year and 3-year long range scheduling, budgeting, and Conductor and Engineer training, development and succession planning; all with a focus on meeting customer needs while maintaining compliance, and maximizing productivity and profit.
- Perform Part 217 Operational Testing, DSLE tasks, and related training for T&E crew.
- Communicate regularly with customers, Dispatch, bridge control, etc. to create daily train operation plans; using established terminals and following proper deadhead rules while allocating horsepower and crews appropriately and efficiently to handle demand, traffic, and the next day’s operations.
- Conduct daily reviews of train crew paperwork to ensure it is complete and compliant; and work with train crews face-to-face to coach and guide for improvement.
- Review T&E Train Crew Hours of Service records; Monitor Paychex submissions, and conduct 2306 follow-up when necessary.

- Manage customer and government affairs’ issues affecting and relevant to the T&E Department, including the development and direction of internal and external correspondence.
- Attend meetings such as: FRA, SCR, MBTA, CSX, and weekly operational meetings, and represent the COO and/or President at meetings as required.
- Manage departmental controls to identify critical issues, checks and balances for ensuring dissemination of this information to senior management.
- Operate a locomotive as a Train Conductor or Train Engineer and interprets train orders, train signals, and railroad rules and regulations to transport freight or passenger trains in a safe, efficient manner when needed.
