Position Title: Youth Care Specialist
Sunday – Thursday (10pm – 6am)
Department: Shelter Services
Reports to: Program Manager, Shelter Services
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
POSITION SUMMARY:
Youth Care Specialists (YCS) provide direct, trauma-informed care to residents 24-hour shelter setting serving youth and young adults including routine wellness checks ensuring the safety, comfort, and supervision of all residents.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Commitment to the ability to work with diverse clients and staff with respect and dignity
- Knowledge and understanding of Motivational Interviewing and Trauma Informed interventions iwth youth
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, collaborating agencies and the public
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and healthy boundaries with clients
- Engages, counsels, manages, motivates and effectively works with high-risk, vulnerable client population, including
- Engages, counsels, manages, and effectively works with people in crisis.
- Ability to understand, enjoy, and be comfortable engaging with youth
- Ability to serve as a role model for all residents
- Moderate Computer Skills including Electronic Health Record
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college and experience working in the fields of human services, healthcare, youth development, or other closely related area or equivalent experience
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION:
- Valid South Carolina Driver’s License and ongoing proof of car insurance
- Satisfactory criminal history check, drug test, driving record, fingerprinting, medical exams, and background checks including the Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry, Sex Offenders Registry, and Motor Vehicle Department
WORKING CONDITIONS and PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The job is usually performed indoors in a traditional office setting. Activities include extended periods of sitting and extensive work at a computer monitor. Ability to communicate orally with clients, candidates, management, and coworkers, both individually and in front of a group is crucial. Regular use of the telephone and e-mail for communication is essential. Hearing and vision within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, to receive ordinary information and to prepare or inspect documents. Requires good manual dexterity for the use of common office equipment (e.g., computers, mobile devices, copier/scanners). No heavy lifting is expected; exertion of up to 50 lbs. of force (e.g., tablet, laptop, computers, office supplies) may occasionally be required. Ability to be outdoors in cold and/or heat for active participation for recreational engagement with the children
