General Summary/Purpose:

Must be able to commit at least 16 hours per week. May accommodate up to 40 hours per week through August.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Technician will follow established procedures and protocols, utilizing aseptic technique, to inventory, catalog, maintain and monitor laboratory assays. Will autoclave to sterilize media and disinfect tissue culture waste before discarding in biohazard bag. Will work cooperatively with other laboratory personnel in the laboratory. May also afford opportunity to perform laboratory test and/or experiments which may include: tissue culture, ELISA and PCR. Process biological specimens including serum, PBMCs, nasal washes from vaccine candidates and maintain accurate inventory. Basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques. Work performed is subject to precise measures of quantity and quality.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED with some science coursework.
  • Training Certificate from Technical Institute preferred.
  • Certificate from technical institute or internship experience preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Near vision to see objects clearly within 20 inches
  • Sharp focus to adjust vision when doing close work that changes distance from eyes.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hands or arms, for example, using keyboard.
  • Communication using the spoken word.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
