Job Description: Assistant Coach –
Reports To: Head Coach / Athletic Director
Position Type: Extra-Curricular / Stipend
GENERAL PURPOSE
The Assistant Coach is an integral part of the Waverly-Shell Rock athletic program, helping to promote student-athlete development in a manner consistent with district values of sportsmanship, integrity, and academic success. This position supports the Head Coach in implementing program goals, supervising athletes, and fostering a positive, inclusive, and competitive environment.
The role may include extended hours, travel, and the management of risk in high-energy environments. Assistant Coaches are expected to demonstrate professionalism, exercise sound judgment, and act in the best interests of the students and program.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Program & Policy Support
- Supports the Head Coach in all aspects of program planning and implementation.
- Enforces all district, state (IHSAA/IGHSAU), and conference rules and regulations.
- Upholds the philosophy, culture, and expectations of the athletic program as defined by the Head Coach.
- Follows proper communication channels and attends team and program meetings.
Coaching & Instruction
- Assists with the instruction of fundamental skills, strategies, and techniques appropriate to the sport.
- Supervises practices, games, and athlete conditioning sessions under the direction of the Head Coach.
- Monitors safety protocols and proper equipment use during all activities.
- Encourages participation, sportsmanship, and effort from all student-athletes.
Student-Athlete Support
- Serves as a mentor and positive role model for student-athletes.
- Assists in tracking student academic performance and supporting classroom expectations.
- Communicates program expectations and rules to student-athletes.
- Provides supervision during travel, practices, and contests to ensure student safety and conduct.
Team Operations & Logistics
- Assists in organizing team travel, game-day preparations, and facility readiness.
- Helps with inventory, distribution, and care of equipment as needed.
- Supports event setup, breakdown, and administrative needs as directed by the Head Coach.
Public & Community Engagement
- Represents the team and school positively to parents, officials, and the community.
- Assists with team communications, social media updates, and promotion of team achievements.
- Participates in outreach activities including feeder program development, youth clinics, or camps.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Iowa Coaching Authorization or Coaching Endorsement (BOEE)
- Current certifications: CPR/AED, Concussion in Sports, Heat Illness Prevention
- Basic understanding of sport-specific skills, rules, and strategy
- Ability to support and implement the Head Coach’s program philosophy and vision
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with students, staff, and parents
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous experience in coaching or participating in the sport
- Employment in the WSR school district or demonstrated interest in long-term involvement
- Ability to contribute positively to program growth, student development, and team culture
