Public Defender - Part Time
The candidate will handle all necessary tasks to provide competent defense for the client. Advises Defendants during the resolution of misdemeanor cases brought in Municipal Court. Resolves assigned cases within policy, learns department guidelines and standards, and performs duties within scope of authority. Working closely with clients, providing and discussing information and strategies. Confers with other professional staff in the preparation and presentation of court cases. Reviews charges as filed, evaluates information, and determines the appropriate strategy for disposition of cases. Discusses public defense cases with solicitor, law enforcement officials, and similar persons to obtain information and possible action relative to defendants. Prepares legal briefs correspondence, pleadings and other papers. Provides responsible staff assistance; recommends modifications to programs, policies, and procedures as appropriate. Attends and participates in professional group meetings; maintain awareness of new trends and developments in the field of law; incorporate new developments as appropriate. Provides legal representation, consultation, and advice to clients. Handles pretrial discovery, withdraw pleas, suppression motions, and appeals.
Performs related duties as required.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should have at least one(1) year of trial experience, be at least twenty-five (25) years of age, and be a member, in good standing, with the State Bar of Georgia. Juris Doctorate required. Previous trial and criminal law experience preferred. Knowledge of criminal law, the judicial system, court practices, and procedures or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
