The Spatial Analyst provides technical and scientific support for conservation initiatives in Conservation by Design (CbD) and measures of conservation success (MOS). the Spatial Analyst is a co-supervised member of the Nevada Science team (50% of position) and Utah Conservation Team (50% of position), whose purpose is to advance and steward the creation and application of science throughout The Nature Conservancy, ensuring that the organization's actions are evidence-based. they will be responsible for cartography, modeling, and specific spatial product development (scripts and maps) by processing rasters and vector-based layers (using Python coding and R coding), GIS software, and remotely-sensed data. There may be work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.

One role would be to help the Nevada Science team research and script a Python model that measures the likelihood of implementing forest fuel management actions for each map pixel in the upper Truckee River watershed of Nevada and California's Sierra Nevada based on spatially-explicit socio-political factors, and that dynamically interfaces with the Science Team's existing software simulating state-and-transition models of management actions applied to ecological systems and perform additional Python scripting and GIS tasks to support other aspects of spatial simulations involving pine marten and native fish habitat suitability in collaboration with TNC ecologists.

As the Nevada Chapter's upper Truckee River Watershed tasks are completed, the Spatial Analyst will provide spatial analyst and GIS support to the Nevada Chapter Energy/Land Use Planning and External Affairs Teams. While not supervised by the Nevada GIS/Spatial Analyst, the Spatial Analyst will coordinate and be coached by the Nevada Chapter's existing GIS/Spatial Analyst who is also working on the upper Truckee River Watershed Project and responsible for the Nevada Chapter's Spatial data management and spatial analyses.

For the Utah chapter, the GIS Specialist will: (a) produce cartography to support real estate transactions, (b) create maps of key preserves, (c) elevate conservation planning by refining our Conservation Support Tool, (d) perform a Utah state-wide data analysis that reveals location of degraded lands, systems and functions to help direct future investments, (e) process spatial and other relational data sets derived from cartographic and tabular source material, (f) design and produce advanced complex queries and professional reports, and (g) use remote-sensed data from monitoring and evaluation of conservation outcomes. The Spatial Analyst will develop and maintain all documentation for Utah Chapter data management, provide hardware and software support, and support other Utah Chapter science functions as needed.

  • Master's Degree in geography or spatially-based science related field with >1 year of experience.

  • Experience communicating effectively with technical and, especially, non-technical staff.

  • Examples of experience scripting advanced Python code (most important), R and ArcGIS/ArcPro (and/or QGIS).

  • Experience and proficiency in working with remotely-sensed data, and data products.

  • Experience writing technical reports.

  • Experience making maps that adhere to cartographic standards.

  • Experience working and communicating with a wide range of people.

  • Capable to travel to Reno, NV and Salt Lake City, UT to attend meetings.

  • High-speed internet at home office if you telecommute.

This position is currently viewed as a 2 (two) year position, however there could possibility be an extension.


Salary for this position will range from $ 60,000 yearly to $ 73,000 yearly based on demographic location of the applicant.
