JOB TITLE: Animal Caretaker
SUPERVISOR: Assistant Director of Operations and Executive Director
Iowa Farm Sanctuary is a farmed animal sanctuary that specializes in rescuing and caring for a variety of farmed animals. We are a non-profit organization that relies on public funding for our operations and animal care.
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Animal Caretaker will be responsible for maintaining the highest standard of care for the animal residents at IFS and ensure their clean, safe, and comfortable living environments. This person will work directly with the Assistant Director, other volunteers and independently.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Clean stalls, pastures, and other housing areas, ensuring residents have clean, safe, and comfortable living environments
● Clean and fill all water buckets and troughs
● Look out for the well-being of the residents and observe for any health concerns
● Basic facility maintenance and grounds keeping
● Assist with animal medical care tasks such as bandage changing, hoof trimming as needed
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Be professional and courteous with volunteers, staff and Board of Directors
● Maintain regular and punctual attendance
● Have a driver’s license and reliable transportation
● Comply with all organization policies and procedures, including adhering to vegan principles while on-site
● Communicate closely with supervisors
● Handle stressful situations in a composed manner
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
● High school Diploma or GED
Experience:
● Familiarity and experience interacting with farmed animals preferred
● General understanding of large and small farmed animals
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
● Must be able to lift 50 lbs safely
● Must be willing to carry animals
● Must be able to do a significant amount of walking, stooping, bending, lifting, and carrying objects
● Must be prepared for possible scratches and bruising injuries related to working around large farmed animals
● Must be able and willing to work in all weather conditions
HOURS AND PAY:
● Part-time, 10-20 hours/week M-F, flexible schedule
● $14/hour
