Job Summary
The Liberty County Board of Commissioners is seeking qualified applicants for the full-time position of Animal Control Officer with Liberty County Animal Services. This position is responsible for enforcing various City/County ordinances and State laws pertaining to animal care and treatment, retrieves animals that are sick, injured, vicious, or non-restrained, and performs other duties attributable to the overall functionality of the division.Major Job Duties
- Responds to calls from citizens.
- Investigates reports of animal cruelty.
- Prepares and files incident reports.
- Interprets laws and ordinances and serves citations.
- Impounds stray animals.
- Provides aid to sick or injured animals.
- Responds to animal bite reports.
- Answers phone lines and processes complaints.
- Records animal intakes.
- Prepares court cases; attends and testifies in court.
- Assists Kennel Technicians with animal care/cleaning duties as needed.
- Performs on-call duty after hours as assigned.
- Performs other related duties.
Required Knowledge
- Local ordinances; state and federal laws pertaining to animal care and control.
- Animal shelter medical practices.
- Pet breed identification; traits; and behavior.
- Computers and job-related software programs
- Evidence collection and documentation procedures.
Required Knowledge & Skills
- Relevant animal care and treatment, as well as county and state laws and ordinances.
- Animal rescue procedures.
- Euthanasia and carcass disposal.

Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- More than 2 years of related experience
- Possession of a valid Georgia driver's license with an acceptable driving history
- Possession of or ability to obtain Animal Control Officer 1 (ACO 1) certification within one year.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
- Typically performed while sitting at a desk or table while intermittently sitting; standing; walking; bending; or stooping.
- Frequently lifts light and heavy objects; uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity; and interacts with animals.
- Typically performed in an office; stockroom; animal shelters; and outdoors. The employee may be exposed to noise; dirt; dust; grease; contagious or infectious diseases; aggressive animals; and occasional cold or inclement weather.
- Work requires use of protective devices such as masks; googles; and gloves.
Salary & Benefits
This is a full-time position with a minimum annual compensation of $38,209.60 (Grade 11). Normal work hours are Monday - Friday from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Will also work a rotating on-call shift for after-hours calls.
