Job Summary
The purpose of this position is to provide reliable power to customers while maintaining a safe environment for employees and consumers. This is accomplished by maintaining FELPS substations and distribution system; participating in tailboard meetings; viewing safety procedures and potential hazards before performing jobs; utilizing a computerized work order management system; operating equipment as needed; calculating line sag; calculating loads for transformers and fuse size; switching operations for loop feed URD system; trimming trees; connecting and disconnecting electric meters; building meter loops; setting poles; meeting with customers as needed; being available for on-call troubleshooting; and assisting Line Foreman and Distribution Manager as needed. Additional other duties may be assigned, based on organizational need.
Essential Functions
The Apprentice Lineman will frame both wooden and steel poles, install overhead and underground transformers, install cut-out combination switches and fuses, connect service to the transformer and provide necessary voltage. Other duties include installation, tying off and energizing of primary voltage conductor (overhead and underground) as well as installation of secondary voltage conductor (overhead and underground), attaching to customer transformer and customer connection, energizing and verifying voltage. Apprentice Lineman must have strong communication and excellent safety skills. Complete all required task for each level of certified apprentice program.
Minimum Qualifications
· High school diploma or equivalent
· Knowledge of electric distribution system principles and design
· Computer skills to include Microsoft Office suite, electric line design software and work order management system
· Three years of electric distribution construction experience preferred
· Demonstrated planning and organizational skills
· Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills
· Demonstrated effective decision making and problem-solving skills
· Ability to maintain composure and commitment to work during periods of heavy workload and willing to work extra hours whenever needed
· Completed training classes to include basics of electricity and CPR/First Aid certification
· Mastery of items listed in Appendix A preferred
· Valid Texas CDL driver’s license (or obtained within 90 days of employment) with acceptable driving record
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
The employee will be required to work primarily in an outdoor setting with occasional indoor work to be performed. Physical requirements include, but are not limited to, standing, sitting, walking, lifting up to 100 pounds, fine dexterity, foot controls (driving), vision, hearing, and talking. Working conditions may involve extended time in variable or adverse weather conditions as well as exposure to vehicle traffic, general construction hazards, heavy equipment and open trenches when on job sites. Post job offer physical, driving record, background check and drug screen required.
APPENDIX A
The Apprentice Lineman shall:
- Demonstrate ability to climb a wooden utility pole and select proper tools to accomplish this task.
- Demonstrate mobile crane hand signals and use hand signals to direct a vehicle.
- Demonstrate ability to perform care and testing of rubber gloves.
- Demonstrate ability to assemble hardware and materials for poles.
- Demonstrate ability for proper use of a voltmeter.
- Demonstrate procedures for performing a butt test on a wooden utility pole.
- Demonstrate procedures for checking load on a single phase 120/240 volt transformer with amp meter.
- Demonstrate procedures for checking polarity of a transformer.
- Demonstrate ability to prepare a transformer for use.
- Interpret transformer name plate.
- Demonstrate procedures for using line hoses and blankets.
- Demonstrate procedures for setting a three (3) and four (4) wire electric meter.
- Assemble and connect transformer banks, including but not limited to:
- WYE-WYE
- OPEN WYE-OPEN DELTA
- WYE-DELTA CLOSED
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of troubleshooting a transformer.
- Demonstrate procedures for working energized conductors from a bucket truck.
- Demonstrate use of a load break tool.
- Demonstrate proper sag for conductors, including but not limited to:
- 1/0 ACSR
- 4/0 ACSR
- 336 AAC and ACSR
- 795 AAC and ACSR
- Demonstrate procedures for pole top rescue.
- Demonstrate procedures for bucket rescue from the ground.
- Demonstrate the ability to transport a pad-mount on a dolly.
- Demonstrate procedures for installing cable tags on underground cable.
- Demonstrate ability to identify underground symbols.
- Complete all task required by each level of certified apprenticeship program
