The Asphalt Laborer will be working with a team of 5 to 8 and reporting to the Foreman that will complete asphalt project(s). The Asphalt Laborer will be operating machines that spread, smooth, level the concrete and asphalt on road beds. The Asphalt Laborer will be responsible inspecting, cleaning and maintaining equipment. The Asphalt laborer will be responsible for following direct orders from the foreman, superintendents and office staff.
Responsibilities:
- Operate machines that spread, smooth, level, or steel reinforce stone, concrete, or asphalt on road beds.
- Observe distribution of paving material to adjust machine settings or material flow, and indicate low spots for workers to add material
- Light burners or start heating units of machines, and regulate screed temperatures and asphalt flow rates.
- Inspect, Clean, & Maintain equipment, using mechanics’ hand tools, or report malfunctions to the PSC Mechanics Shop
- Operate tamping machines or manually roll surfaces to compact earth fills, foundations forms, and finished road materials, according to grade specifications.
- Start machine, engage clutch, and push and move levers to guide machine along forms or guidelines, and to control the operation of machine attachments.
- Fill tanks, hoppers, or machines with paving materials.
- Set up and tear down equipment.
- Coordinate Truck Dumping.
- Removes old pavement and prepares surface for repaving including the use of pneumatic tools.
- Prepares surface for asphaltic mixture by "painting".
- Shovels, rakes, spreads hot asphaltic material in the repair or resurfacing of streets.
- Compacts & smooths asphaltic patches by rolling.
- Operates asphalt kettle and / or automatic emulsion spray rake and tool heater.
- Places and removes barricades and cleans up job site upon completion of work
- Attending Monthly safety meetings
Requirements:
- 1 to 5 years of experience in Construction working with asphalt focused projects
- Knowledge of using tools, materials, and equipment used in asphalt pavement resurfacing activities (such as pot operation, patch painting, shoveling, and rolling asphaltic mixtures)
- Knowledge of basic safety practices required for safe use of tools, materials, and equipment.
- Able to lift, stand and walk for long periods of time
- Understand and follow oral instructions; communicate with supervisors, co-workers, and office staff
- Willingness to travel 50 – 100%
