Job Description
The Assistant Center Director plans, organizes, and directs the operations and activities at John Chavis Memorial Park personally, with the Center Director or through subordinate employees. This position is responsible for assisting with the delivery of numerous large-scale special events, programs/classes, athletics, and rentals while ensuring exceptional customer experiences for all users of John Chavis Memorial Park and Community Center. Central duties include the ability to dynamically engage the community and conduct outreach to underserved populations to develop and market programs for diverse ages and populations. Additionally, this role supervises part-time staff and volunteers.

The City of Raleigh is currently searching for a detail-oriented, enthusiastic individual who is a dynamic recreation programmer with a passion for people to serve as the Assistant Director of John Chavis Memorial Park and Community Center. We are seeking a collaborative team player with outstanding customer service skills. Success in this role requires initiative, creativity, and motivation to connect with the surrounding community and deliver a wide range of unique experience, from special events and programs to classes, rentals, athletic leagues, and more. No two days are the same, so the ability to prioritize tasks, adapt to changing circumstances, and communicate effectively is essential.
About Us:
Our mission is to connect and enrich our community through exceptional experiences. John Chavis Memorial Park, located in the heart of downtown Raleigh, was developed in 1937 as a separate but equal recreational center for African Americans. This is a landmark of treasured social and civic activity for over 80 years. In April 2016, John Chavis Memorial Park was added to the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places. As part of a park Master Plan revision, John Chavis Memorial Park has undergone renovations, including the completion of a brand-new community center, playground, splash pad and historic carousel house meeting space. The new facility and park officially opened on June 12, 2021. The new facility includes a two-story community center with a full-size indoor gymnasium, elevated walking track, fitness center as well as numerous classroom and meeting spaces. The exterior surrounding park updates consists of a new central plaza with an integrated water feature, renovated former carousel house, and a large playground for variety of ages and abilities. The existing park amenities also include a historic Herschell carousel, baseball field, outdoor walking track with multipurpose field and 3 picnic shelters.
Work Hours:
This position works at a community center that is open 7 days a week. Flexibility is required to be available for staff meetings, facility events, and providing coverage to part-time staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Program, Event, and League Coordination: Plan, organize, and manage staff or lead programs, events, camps and leagues tailored to diverse age groups and interests, promoting community engagement and an inclusive, active environment. Assist with the planning, coordination, and execution of large-scale special events.
- Staff and Volunteer Leadership: Recruit and manage a team comprising of part-time staff, a contracted custodian, and volunteers, ensuring effective collaboration and performance.
- Community Service: Deliver excellent customer service to patrons and the community, serving as a primary representative of the department at public meetings and assisting with resolving patron concerns, including complaints, refund requests, transfers, and other special situations.
- Operational Management: Coordinate daily operations and scheduling, facility maintenance, assisting with set-up and break-down of spaces, rentals and resource allocation, to ensure smooth and efficient functioning.
- Marketing & Outreach: Develop and execute strategies to promote programs and events, utilizing various channels to reach a broad audience.
- Budget Oversight: Managing the center's budget, including tracking and reporting, and identifying opportunities for cost-effective solutions.
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation or directly related field and up to one year of related experience
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing and Certifications:
- CPR/First Aid/AED/EPI certification, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certified Parks and Recreation Profession; the City of Raleigh additionally offers support in obtaining this certification

- Supervisory techniques for organizing, prioritizing, assigning and monitoring tasks, as well as coaching and leading team members
- Experience in community engagement outreach to build and foster effective and professional relationships with individuals and community organizations
- Qualitative and quantitative research methods, with strong critical thinking and analytical skills
- Standard budget practices for interpreting and reporting financial information and statistics
- Creating and preparing original reports, documents and presentations with clarity and precision
- Providing excellent customer service, including utilizing judgement in determining strategies to handle a variety of situations
- Marketing strategies, incorporating best practices, current trends, and innovative technologies
ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); frequent exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids); frequent exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and movement restrictions; and moderate exposure intense noise or travel.
