Your primary focus will be assisting the Special Sections Editor and participating in other newsroom activities, which could include reporting and production.
Responsibilities:
Op-Ed Coordination
- Schedule columnists across towns, ensuring appropriate frequency and coverage
- Maintain Excel spreadsheet tracking all columnists by town
- Create weekly editorial package outlining each town’s op-ed lineups
- Send Monday reminders to op-ed wranglers to confirm scheduled columnists
- Ensure submissions meet Wednesday deadline; follow up when needed
- Coordinate with internal/external teams on scheduling, deadlines, and word count
- Ensure all op-eds meet word count and include headshots
- Reorganize editorial packages when op-ed holes or pickups occur
- Post all editorials and op-eds to the Herald site
- Assign new wranglers to op-ed contacts as needed
Weekly Story Checks
- Verify that each town has five stories posted in the news category for newsletters
- Troubleshoot webpage or content issues with the team as needed
Special Sections Support
- Report, write, and post the “Stepping Out” segment
- Assist with major special projects (e.g., Red and Blue, Nurses' Week, Viewfinder)
- Write weekly event newsletter and post “The Scene” events to the site
For this position, you will be working in our Garden City office in New York. It is not a position that can be done only remotely.
