Job Summary
We are seeking a knowledgeable Authorization Specialist to join our healthcare team. The ideal candidate will play a critical role in ensuring that patients receive the necessary authorizations for medical services and procedures. This position requires a strong understanding of medical terminology, insurance verification processes, and coding systems such as ICD-9 and ICD-10. The Authorization Specialist will work closely with healthcare providers, insurance companies, and patients to facilitate seamless communication and ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations.
Responsibilities
- Review and process authorization requests for medical services and procedures.
- Verify patient insurance coverage and eligibility for services.
- Utilize medical coding knowledge to accurately document procedures using ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes.
- Communicate effectively with healthcare providers, insurance representatives, and patients regarding authorization status.
- Maintain accurate medical records and documentation in compliance with HIPAA standards.
- Address any issues or discrepancies related to authorization requests promptly.
- Collaborate with the billing department to ensure proper coding and billing practices are followed.
- Stay updated on changes in insurance policies, medical terminology, and coding practices.
Experience
- Previous experience in a healthcare setting is preferred, particularly in roles involving medical records or coding.
- Strong understanding of medical terminology and insurance verification processes is essential.
- Familiarity with dental office procedures is a plus but not required.
- Experience with HIPAA compliance regulations is highly desirable.
- Proficiency in using office software and electronic health record (EHR) systems is beneficial.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are necessary for effective interaction with various stakeholders.
