The Bilingual School Psychologist will provide psychological services in English and the designated target language to elementary students in New York City public schools. This professional will conduct assessments, deliver counseling, consult with teachers and families, and support the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The role requires expertise in bilingual assessment, cultural responsiveness, and collaborative work within a multidisciplinary team to support the academic, social, and emotional success of diverse learners.
Responsibilities
- Conduct Evaluations: Perform psychological assessments in both English and the target language to determine eligibility for special education services, including cognitive, academic, social-emotional, and behavioral assessments.
- Counseling and Interventions: Provide individual and group counseling services to support students’ emotional and behavioral needs, focusing on culturally and linguistically appropriate interventions.
- Consultation: Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and families to develop strategies that address students’ academic and social-emotional challenges.
- IEP Development: Participate in Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings, contribute to IEP goals, and provide input on students’ educational planning.
- Progress Monitoring: Track students’ academic, social, and emotional progress, and adjust interventions accordingly.
- Crisis Intervention: Respond to school crises and provide support to students, families, and staff as needed.
- Compliance: Ensure adherence to NYCDOE, state, and federal regulations for special education and psychological services.
- Cultural and Linguistic Support: Serve as a resource for staff and families on issues related to bilingual education, second language acquisition, and culturally responsive practices.
Qualifications
- Education: Master’s or Doctoral degree in School Psychology from an accredited program.
- Certification: New York State Certification as a School Psychologist (provisional or permanent).
- Language Proficiency: Bilingual proficiency in English and [target language], including oral and written communication.
- Knowledge: Understanding of bilingual assessment practices, second language acquisition, and cultural factors in learning.
- Skills: Strong collaboration, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
Preferred Experience
- Experience working in urban elementary school settings.
- Knowledge of NYCDOE special education procedures and bilingual evaluation requirements.
- Training in evidence-based interventions for literacy, behavior, and social-emotional learning.

- Principal and NYCDOE School Psychologist Supervisor.
Work Year and Compensation
- 10-month school year, with salary and benefits per the UFT/NYCDOE contract.
