Job Summary
The Success Coach is a full-time, school-based advocate dedicated to supporting low-to- moderate income (LMI) English Language Learner (ELL) students in Birmingham City Schools (BCS). The Coach serves as an advocate, mentor, instructor, and culturally responsive resource for students and their families. The position is designed to increase student & parent engagement, support academic progress, and facilitate access to post-secondary education and workforce opportunities. Coaches provide daily, personalized support, as well as group programming aligned with ¡HICA!’s and BCS’s education initiatives. While primarily based at a designated school, Coaches may rotate across other BCS schools as needed, in consultation with ¡HICA! supervisor and school staff.

Key Responsibilities:
Student Support & Coaching
· Conduct one-on-one bilingual coaching sessions focused on academic engagement, personal growth, and college or career planning.
· Support newcomers in navigating U.S. school systems, expectations, & graduation requirements.
· Guide students & families through scholarship, financial aid, & post-secondary application processes.
· Design individualized success plans aligned with academic goals and school support services.
· Assist students with alternative pathway planning, including certifications, trade programs, and
· Assist with alternative planning, including certifications, trade programs, & workforce entry.
Family Engagement
· Support BCS’s Multilingual Family Engagement efforts.
· Assist the BCS Bilingual Communications Coordinator, ESL Department, and assigned schools with planning and delivering bilingual family engagement events.
Program Facilitation & Data Management
· Lead HICA’s Escalera (high school) and LISTO (middle school) programs in assigned schools.
· Facilitate literacy support and group academic enrichment as assigned by BCS Empower Staff.
· Record & analyze student interactions, progress, & goals with QuickBase & other data tracking tools.
· Collect and input intake data, parent engagement indicators, and attendance records to maintain updated student profiles. Log and categorize all touchpoints, including workshops, one-on-one sessions, and family support services.
· Provide weekly updates and performance dashboards to HICA’s education team and school collaborators.
· Review success metrics and prepare impact summaries to support program evaluation, improvement, and reporting.
· Ensure data accuracy and integrity through routine audits and quality checks in collaboration with HICA’s data team.
School Collaboration
· Maintain communication with school principals, assistant principals, counselors, and teachers.
· Participate in student support meetings and advocate for culturally appropriate interventions.
· Collaborate with Birmingham City Schools’ equity and training initiatives to promote inclusive and responsive practices.
· Ensure Success Coach activities are aligned with school goals, policies, and support systems.
Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, psychology, or related field; equivalent experience considered.
· 2+ years of experience in youth development, academic advising, coaching, or school- based programming.
· Fluent in English and Spanish, with strong verbal and written communication skills in both languages.
· Experience working with immigrant and/or low-income communities in a culturally responsive manner.
· Knowledge of Birmingham City Schools or similar urban education environments preferred.
· Strong organizational skills, emotional intelligence, and ability to work independently within a school system.
· Familiarity with student data tools, success tracking systems, and outcome measurement.
· Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for family events or workshops.
· Commitment to ¡HICA!’s mission of community development, education equity, and immigrant empowerment.
Compensation:
Salary: $40K to $45K, based on experience and qualifications. Excellent benefits package that includes Blue Cross Blue Shield Health and Dental insurance paid at 100% for employees with coverage starting on first day of employment (vision coverage is optional). Three weeks of PTO plus 11 paid holidays, a one-week mid-year summer break, 2 weeks paid holiday break at end of year, and birthday off. IRA retirement plan with 3% company match after 1 year of service.
