The Buyer is responsible for the procurement of raw materials, equipment and selected services for the OCS (Connectivity/Fusion Splicer/Professional Services) division. This is accomplished through the review and maintenance of the automated inventory control and purchasing system (SAP). The Buyer is also responsible for soliciting quotes and proposals for selected materials and or services. This information is to be evaluated and presented to management in an effort to make the best decisions relative to supplier selection. Additionally Buyers are expected to keep management aware of price fluctuations that may occur within their assigned scope of responsibilities.

  • Review usage information and inventory level guidelines. Use this information as a basis for purchases.
  • Create third party purchase orders for OFS contract manufacturers. Responsible for subsequent third party PO follow-up with suppliers and contract manufacturers including expedites, modifications, revisions, expedited freight, etc.
  • Work on various projects including new product launch, sourcing changes, aged/surplus inventory disposition and cost reductions
  • Update and establish purchasing procedures as required
  • Maintain a list of qualified suppliers
  • Provide input to supplier evaluations
  • Cross training in order to serve as a backup for other team members
  • Strong computer skills - Microsoft office including Microsoft Excel at intermediate level (formulas, formatting, etc.)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills - expresses self well – both written and orally
  • Working knowledge of working with Contract manufacturers
  • Strong data entry skills
  • Self-starter, ability to work well independently and multitask
  • Strong team player
  • Attention to detail and accuracy are essential
  • SAP experience
  • Connectivity and Fusion Splicer Product knowledge preferred
  • Previous purchasing and/or Connectivity experience preferred
  • Technical/ Associate degree or higher preferred
  • Working knowledge of accounting principles preferred
  • Prior experience with production planning, MRP, and economic order quantities preferred
  • Knowledge of lean processes preferred

  • Establish purchase agreements with terms favorable to OFS.
  • Determine quantities, pricing and delivery dates for purchased items ensuring and uninterrupted flow of business at OFS OCS (Connectivity).
  • Determine min.-max. levels for materials and propose them to Supply Chain and Procurement Management Department.
  • Determine when to escalate or expedite materials and freight
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask
  • Receive direction from Supply Chain and Procurement Management on materials to purchase.
  • Receive direction from Engineering concerning equipment purchases.
  • Receive direction from Supply Chain and Procurement Manager in regard to department objectives, projects and supplier relations.
  • Receive direction from Customer Service for customer expectations and requests.
  • Responsible for reviewing the inventory position/reorder point of production, maintenance, office supplies and raw materials.

This is accomplished by reviewing inventory position and open demand in the computerized inventory system and communicating with the warehouse personnel.

  • Must have a good understanding of all department functions and demonstrate the ability to cross train.
  • Writes or completes requisitions; telephones or faxes orders to vendors; files the paperwork; and enters order information (such as the item, quality, and delivery date) into the automated production tracking computer system.
  • Responsible for maintaining supplies, and some raw materials.
  • Assists Accounting and Receiving with questions and problem solving of with packing lists and invoices resulting in the accurate billing of accounts.
  • Work on various projects including product launch, cost reductions, inventory reductions, and sourcing selections.

Maintains a Safe, clean and neat work area; is alert to safety issues, especially when in the manufacturing area; works as a team with co-workers; and conducts business with vendors in a professional manner.
