The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) has a career opportunity within the Child Support Services Division/Field Services.

This position is with the Child Support Services Division. The Child Support Investigator maintains a complex caseload (up to 500 cases) and provides state administered child support services.

Qualifications for this Career Opportunity


  • Knowledge of investigative principles, due process, administrative and judicial process.
  • Knowledge of mediation and dispute resolution principles.
  • Knowledge of general collections principles and social service programs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to perform basic math calculations.
  • Ability to analyze information, make decisions and solve problems.
  • Ability to organize, plan, and prioritize work.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and general office equipment as necessary to complete the essential functions, including using spreadsheet, word processing, database, email, internet, and other computer programs.
  • Meet minimum qualifications:
    • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, business administration, public administration, social work, psychology, or related field.
    • Three years job related experience, child support, general investigative or relevant collections experience.
    • Other combinations of directly related education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Additional Information


This position may be eligible for partial telework within the state of Montana. Specific conditions will be provided by the supervisor and must adhere to state policy.


This position may be eligible for a statutory $1.00 an hour base pay increase effective July 1, 2025 and July 1, 2026.

Applicant Pool Statement: If another department vacancy occurs in this job title within six months, the same applicant pool may be used for the selection.
Training Assignment: This agency may use a training assignment. Employees in training assignments may be paid below the base pay established by the agency pay rules. Conditions of the training assignment will be stated in writing at the time of hire.

Salary: $ 29.09 - 29.09 Hourly
