Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher in clinical laboratory sciences, chemistry, biology or equivalent.
License/Certification: Certification as a Medical Technologist by a nationally recognized board/agency.
Experience: At least four (4) years of working experience as a Medical Technologist in a full-service high-complexity clinical laboratory. At least 1 year of flow cytometry experience. Supervisory experience preferred.
Job Summary: This position reports directly to the Laboratory Director. The Laboratory Manager is responsible and accountable for the operation, administration, technical supervision and management of human and financial resources of the laboratory. This is a working manager position including hands-on laboratory testing.
Job Specific Functions: Reinforces BioCytics values, Quality Management and understanding of applicable laws and standards. Performs laboratory testing as necessary to ensure continuity of services. Demonstrates proficiency in understanding the materials presented during the corporate integrity and compliance training and education program. Complies with all HIPAA standards. Contributes to departmental strategy and establishes goals and objectives for team members for achievement of operational results. Establishes relevant metrics to drive departmental success. Identifies and drives opportunities for cost savings and driving revenue. Serves as an escalation point to drive resolution of challenges in operations, quality, safety, supply chain efficiencies across multiple departments. Drives CAPA closure and resolution, quality compliance and metrics, oversight of quality incidents and resolution, root cause analysis and improvements. Drives a continuous improvement, safety focused and quality-oriented culture.
Administrative Functions: Manages the day-to-day operations of the Laboratory. Participates in initiatives to improve employee engagement to positively impact operational results, customer satisfaction and employee retention. Works closely and effectively with the Lab Director and liaisons with other departments to address medical laboratory services needs. Provides prompt direction and leadership to resolve and correct performance, client, and lab issues and/or concerns. Represents the Laboratory under the direction or absence of the Laboratory Director. Assists with CLIA Laboratory Director to plan and develop objectives and goals for the department Quality and Compliance. Ensures compliance with COLA/CAP, CMS, HIPAA, FDA and other regulatory agencies and laws governing laboratory services. Ensures implementation and administration of department quality program. Directs, supports, and promotes continuous improvement of quality and services. Ensures on-going laboratory and employee readiness for survey by any regulatory agency.
Finance Management: Assists in developing laboratory budget. Responsible for inventory management. Monitors utilization of resources and services for appropriateness and efficiencies.
Human Resources Management: Ensures appropriate and adequate staffing levels (including scheduling) to meet patient care laboratory testing needs. Assists in recruitment and selection of new employees. Develops and implements employee training/competency programs and coordinates continuing education. Effectively and efficiently handles employee relation issues. Where appropriate, works collaboratively with Human Resources department. Performs employee performance assessments and develops action plans for improvement and/or growth on an annual or as needed basis. In coordination with lab team members, provides laboratory orientation and onboarding to new hires.
Communication/Customer Service: Communicates and handles problems with customers, physicians and other clinical staff and responds to their needs in a timely manner. Actively engages nursing and other services to improve coordination and communication of patient care. Regularly communicates with staff either through emails/electronic messaging, huddles, meetings, video and phone calls. Regularly communicates and updates Lab. director / CLIA Lab director as appropriate.
Inventory Management: Maintains adequate inventory of reagents and supplies. Assist with the purchasing functions (interact with purchasing, identify specifications, call companies, research and evaluate).

Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated competency in high-complexity clinical laboratory skills including but not limited to quality control, proficiency testing, automated testing systems, hematology manual differential, urine microscopy, immunology assays, general chemistry and molecular diagnostic testing. Ability to adapt to accreditation/regulatory changes in the laboratory industry. Ability to analyze data, draw conclusions and interpret results. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to demonstrate responsibility, dependability, and professionalism. Ability to maintain inventory control systems and make budgetary projections. Ability to organize, prioritize, multi-task, and adapt to changing priorities. Ability to provide excellent customer service. Ability to schedule adequate numbers of competent staff on a day to day basis. Ability to solve problems and identify solutions. Ability to train, orient, and evaluate the job performance of new employees and students. Ability to work effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization. Physical and other Requirements Occasional light lifting is expected. Ability to sit/stand for extensive periods of time.
