Job Overview
As a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, you will play a crucial role in our laboratory by performing comprehensive test analyses that support the diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions. Your expertise in handling complex assays and your commitment to maintaining high standards of quality and accuracy will ensure that we provide reliable results to clinicians and patients alike. Responsible for various high-complexity clinical laboratory tests in clinical chemistry, immunology, hematology, urinalysis and microbiology. Perform QC/QA procedures, preventive maintenance, and test validation. Review and report test results following laboratory standards. Maintain working knowledge of laboratory policies and procedures.
Duties
- Demonstrate competency and sustained performance of Clinical Laboratory Scientist duties.
- Perform assigned daily lab assignments, loading and running tests, and maintenance of assigned machines.
- Conduct additional molecular diagnostic tests (e.g., PCR, RT-PCR, DNA sequencing).
- Analyze and interpret complex test results independently for all test types, highlighting any significant findings that my affect patient management. Prepare comprehensive reports that clearly communicate findings to physicians and other healthcare professionals.
- Assist in developing and validating new assays, particularly in molecular diagnostics
- Q/C work to include aliquoting process for reagents and calibrators
- Maintain clean and orderly work area, assist with equipment sterilization, and assist with storage of confirmed samples.
- Manage in manufacturing of media for testing.
- Provide support and oversight to Send Out Program(s).
- Ensure appropriate supply levels are maintained and reorder notifications are timely, monitor reagent supply levels and expiration dates following Company SOPs.
- Create reports and/or maintain, management logs as assigned.
- Collaborate with the Lab Staff and Office Staff to ensure timely and accurate testing.
- Collaborate with the laboratory team to optimize existing protocols and develop new testing methodologies as needed, enabling the laboratory to stay at the forefront of molecular diagnostics.
- Train and onboard and lead lab assistants and technicians in performing their jobs. Assist in the guidance and direction of technicians, assistants and support personnel.
- Perform lab tests, including Chemistry, Immunoassay, Hematology, Molecular accurately.
- Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, reporting, and record-keeping of patient test results. Recognize deviations from expected results and take appropriate corrective action to solve analytical problems
- Demonstrate excellent troubleshooting skills on automated instruments.
- Oversight of sample management to ensure all samples are correctly logged, problems transitioned or resolved, and all tests performed before samples are discarded and that Company SOP is followed.
- Check and analyze quality control data. Make informed judgments concerning analytical data. Take appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision.
- Provide accurate test results within the expected turnaround time.
- Respond to inquiries regarding test results, factors affecting tests, normal, abnormal toxic and therapeutic range and specificity and sensitivity of assays.
- Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance.
- Identify and address problems that may impact test performance or result reporting promptly.
- Evaluate and solve problems involved with the collection and processing of biological specimens
- Provide notification of critical results as assigned.
- Answer phones, call clients for information needed to process tests as required.
- Adhere to confidential (HIPAA) requirements for personal and proprietary information and CLIA, OSAH and safety guidelines.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or related field
- Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license
- ASCP certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or equivalent
- Knowledge of laboratory information systems (LIS)
- Understanding of CLIA regulations and laboratory accreditation requirements
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Preferred
- 2+ years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting
- Experience with molecular diagnostic techniques
- Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and hazardous materials handling
- Proficiency with electronic health record systems
- Experience with quality management systems
- Specialty certification in areas such as hematology, chemistry, microbiology, or immunology
