Job Responsibilities
The Clinical Surgical Technology Instructor performs the following functions:
Teaching Performance: Provides students with appropriate course materials, including syllabi, calendars, and policy statements. Prepares and delivers instruction that adheres to course competencies and aligns with student learning outcomes. Uses a variety of instructional strategies and technologies to support different learning styles. Provides timely and constructive feedback to students. Maintains a positive and supportive classroom and lab environment to promote student engagement and success. Teaches didactic and laboratory courses and coordinates instruction delivered at clinical sites. Assigns, observes, and evaluates students in clinical settings to ensure progression toward clinical competence.
Instructional Development: Develops and maintains competency-based course syllabi and instructional materials in coordination with the Department Chair and other faculty. Ensures that all clinical course content is current, aligned with accreditation standards, and responsive to changes in the field. Participates in continuous quality review of curriculum and clinical experience. Supports curriculum planning, student assessment strategies, and program evaluation to ensure effective instruction and student achievement. Stays current with best practices in teaching, including instructional technology and alternative delivery methods.
Instructional Management: Coordinates the clinical education component of the program, including identifying and maintaining sufficient clinical sites. Schedules clinical orientations, assigns students to clinical sites, and communicates expectations with clinical site personnel. Ensures orientation to program requirements for all site-based supervisors and instructors. Maintains accurate records of clinical hours and surgical procedures completed by students. Monitors and evaluates student performance in clinical settings and ensures timely documentation of progress. Submits required program reports and data, including annual program review and outcomes assessments. Assists in budget planning and procurement of instructional materials and clinical supplies.
Student Advisement: Provides academic advising and guidance to students, including short- and long-term educational planning. Maintains regular office hours and remains available to meet student needs. Assists students in setting goals, navigating institutional policies, and accessing support services. Participates in team advising and utilizes appropriate technology to support student advising.
College and Community Service: Promotes the Surgical Technology program and participates in recruitment efforts. Maintains relationships with clinical partners and advisory board members. Serves on college and departmental committees as assigned. Participates in college events, including graduation. Supports the college's mission and engages in outreach and service in the broader community.
Professional Development: Maintains currency in the field of surgical technology and health sciences education. Participates in professional development activities, conferences, workshops, and continuing education.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
- Possess a credential in the field of Surgical Technology through a national certification program that is accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA) – Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Certified Surgical Technologist/Certified Surgical First Assistant (CST/CSFA).
- Possess a minimum of three years of relevant scrubs experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past five years.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Surgical Technology.
- Experience with CAAHEP accreditation and program management.
- Two or more years of teaching experience at the higher education level.
